Rudy Gay Takes Batting Practice With The Memphis Redbirds
NBA, Rudy Gay

Could Rudy Gay Become The Next 2-Sport Star? Not Likely... But Could Someone Else Pull It Off?

Don't expect him to retire and attempt a career in professional baseball any time soon, a la Michael Jordan, but it turns out that Rudy Gay's athleticism reaches beyond the court, and onto the baseball field.

Gay took batting practice with the Memphis Redbirds, the St Louis Cardinals' AAA affiliate last Friday, after he and his cousin made a bet on whether or not he could hit a home run.

He actually did hit one, just like he said he could, and according to those who saw him, showed flashes of legitimate ability.

It's been a while since we've seen a 2-sport star, but could we see one again in the near future? I'm not saying that Rudy Gay could be the one, but who are some athletes that could legitimately succeed in 2 separate sports? One of the guys who might have been able to do it was Tom Glavine, who was an excellent hockey player as well, before starting his Hall of Fame baseball career. Could we see someone pull it off, like Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Brian Jordan, and a few others? Who knows... but I'd love to see it happen.

you do hear a lot lately of things like this. Matt Casell for example was also drafted in Baseball...or recruited it was one or the other

Golden Tate, WR and CF for ND's football and baseball teams.  He was drafted in the 42nd round by the Diamondbacks and he's well on his way to becoming possibly a first day pick in the NFL draft.  Jeff "The Shark" Samardzija could have done it as well.
