Rudy Gay to Raptors trade in place

The Memphis Grizzlies have reportedly agreed in principle to a trade that will send small forward Rudy Gay and center Hamed Haddadi to the Toronto Raptors. In return, the Toronto Raptors are willing to offer point guard Jose Calderon and forward Ed Davis, according to league sources.
However, the Memphis Grizzlies already have Mike Conley starting at point guard and Jerryd Bayless serving as backup so they aren’t in a dire need of another point guard in the form of Jose Calderon. Subsequently, the Memphis Grizzlies are looking for another team to take on Jose Calderon in the trade, and in return for a forward (to the Grizzlies) as part of a three-team deal.
The eight year veteran Jose Calderon has for quite some time now way out of Toronto, and the Detroit Pistons have for long coveted Calderon. The Memphis Grizzlies also have the Detroit Pistons on their radar as the most likely third team in the trade. The Detroit Pistons have two possible forwards in the form of Tayshaun Prince and Corey Maggette to offer in the trade.
But the Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly looking at least one or two other teams – Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks – to take on Jose Calderon. The Boston Celtics are in great need of a point guard after losing veteran Rajon Rondon to a season-ending ACL injury last week. Moreover, the Boston Celtics could offer small forward Paul Pierce (who has just $4 million guaranteed for the final year of his contract next season) as a possible replacement for Rudy Gay on the Memphis Grizzlies’ roster. The Dallas trade is more unlikely to happen since the Mavericks are hesitant to the idea of parting with Vince Carter, whom the Memphis Grizzlies are targeting on their roster in a possible deal.
Although the Memphis Grizzlies (29-15), currently ranking fourth in the Western Conference, are risking a lot by breaking up the current roster that has meshed so well all season, the Grizzlies primarily have financial concerns going forth with the current roster. Rudy Gay will still have $37 million left on his contract after the current season and the new ownership is not hot on spending that kind of money.
After being selected eight overall out of University of Connecticut in the 2006 drafts and being traded the same night to the Memphis Grizzlies, Rudy Gay has averaged 17.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in his seven-year NBA career.
Moreover, after trading forward Marreese Speights earlier this month in a move to avoid paying luxury tax next season, the Memphis Grizzlies are looking to add more depth down low, rounding up their pursuit of Ed Davis.

The Memphis Grizzlies are also expected to receive a second round-pick from the Toronto Raptors in the Rudy Gay trade.
