Rumor: Billy Donovan offered Orlando Magic head coaching position
READ MORE:
Bet you didn't see that coming? Oh wait, of course you did.

In the new game of take what a coach says and interpret it to mean the exact opposite you should have known this was going to happen. Too bad that top notch recruiting class didn't.

According to the Orlando Sentinel the Orland Magic have given Donovan a substantial offer and fully expect him to accept the position by the end of the week. (Update: AP reports he accepted)

Should he take the job? No, no and no. (see: Rick Pitino, Mike Montgomery, Nick Saban, etc) Billy is a college guy.

Good luck, though. He'd better pray they find Dwight Howard some backcourt help. Discuss.

His greatest strength as a college coach is recruiting.  Won't help him in the NBA game.

Let me be the first Magic fan to comment.  I am very wary of the whole "college coach curse," but that doesn't make me any less excited about this.  At the very least, this is a great PR move for the team (especially with a new Arena on the Horizon).  Plus, Brian Hill lost us quite a few games over the past two years.  Billy might be a college coach, but I don't think he will lose us games.

Here's to Billy breaking the curse!  GO MAGIC!

As a college basketball fan first and foremost, this has me giddy. I love the chaos this will cause among the coaching and recruiting circles.

Oh, by the way, Donovan will fail miserably in Orlando.

Agree with you there. Assuming this goes through, and I think it will (thought it would a month ago), this should a fun game of dominoes in the coaching ranks. There's a decent chance they'll still keep the recruits currently signed.

I hope all you Gator fans out there liked your little run while it lasted. Because it's over now. Almost the entire team declaring for the draft is one thing, but now without Donovan, Florida will be back where they belong, in the middle of the SEC.

Sounds like 6 years $40 million.

All I can say is... P.J. Carlesimo!

Good luck, Billy, you'll need it.

Thats insane, 3/4 of the players don't get paid that much.

Shanoff brings up the intriguing name of Anthony Grant. He's a Donovan guy, bright future, and head coach of VCU. I like it!

When Brian Hill was fired last week I predicted Donovan would be the hire ... is that what you're talking about?

Nope... I "saw" somewhere on the bottom line of ESPN that the Magic had offered Donovan a lot.

Dwight Howard can make them a contender.

I DON'T KNOW WHY WE ARE TALKING IN CAPS, BUT I WOULD SAY DONOVAN IS ONE OF THE BEST BASKETBALL COACHES OF THE DECADE, NOT THE BEST.  SOME PRO COACHES AND ONE OR TWO COLLEGE COACHES ARE BETTER IMO, BUT HOWARD BASICALLY GOT ORLANDO IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR, AND ALL THEY NEED IS ONE MORE THREAT, AND KA-BLOOM; THEY'LL BE A BIG THREAT IN THE "ALL-SO-SUCKISH" EAST....................................................... GO BULLS!

SORRY bout the caps bad habit.  But i said best college not pro coach, he has led the gators to 3 final fours, won 2 and has contsantly brought in top recruiting class.

Name another NCAA Division 1 coach that has done that?

And for Orlando you might be right cuz the east is only getting worst and the top draft picks are going to the west

I'll give you the fact anyone can win in the east next year (except Boston, they can't even win a lottery), but as CF said earlier today, theres no recruit class for the NBA, sure he's going to have some say in the players they bring it, but it won't be the same, and he won't have all of the decisions.  Orlando has about 2-3 more years, before the team is fully developed enough.  Losing Grant Hill won't be too easy either.

Recruiting, his "high point," is not needed in the NBA.
