Russell Wilson named starting QB for the Seattle Seahawks

Is Russell Wilson the best choice for the Seahawks?

Aug 11, 2012; Seattle, WA, USA; NFL: Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks Matt Flynn (15) and Russell Wilson (3) walk on to the field for pregame warmups against the Tennessee Titans at CenturyLink Field. Mandatory Credit: Joe Nicholson-US PRESSWIREPete Carroll said earlier this year that he doesn't care how much anyone is getting paid, he's going to choose starters based on how they look on the field.

After acquiring former Packers backup QB Matt Flynn in the offseason for a pretty penny, Carroll showed that he was serious last week, when he named 3rd round draft pick Russell Wilson the starting quarterback.

Flynn is in the first year of a 3 year deal worth just under $20M. Wilson is in his rookie contract, which is usually peanuts for 3rd round picks.

Still Wilson has been the clearly superior QB in the postseason, and it looks like he gives the Seahawks the best chance to win football games.

The main criticism of Wilson has been his height. At only 5'11", he's not the ideal height for a QB. If he were 3 inches taller, he probably would have been taken 3rd overall, or at the very least, 8th instead of Ryan Tannehill.

Now, Wilson is getting his chance. Unfortunately, it's at the expense of Flynn, who excelled in his only start last year, throwing for 480 yards and 6 TD against the Lions.

Is Wilson the best choice for the Seahawks, or should they have given Flynn another chance to prove he deserves the job?

Wonder how much Matt Flynn wishes he was still in Green Bay now?  At least he was behind one of top 5 in the league in Aaron Rodgers.  Now he's #2 behind a very talented, but as of yet NFL unproven rookie.  Time will tell how smart it is to start Wilson.

So this year we are playing the postseason games before regular season games?

If PC would have gone with Flynn, he would have made a liar out of himself. He preaches competition for starting jobs at every position, and contrary to what a lot of people think, he has the integrity to follow up on that. Wilson has obviously played better than Flynn throughout the preseason, therefore earning the starting spot. I do believe that Flynn deserves a chance somewhere, and maybe he'll even get it with the Seahawks sometime this season if Wilson's level of play falls off much. Just because Wilson has been named the starter for week 1 doesn't mean he automatically is named starter for the entire season, especially with PC.

Wilson is the best choice hands down.  I think that history will show that he is the 2nd best QB to come out of this class behind only Andrew Luck.  Admittedly, I've been a fan of Wilson's for a couple years and I haven't been high on Flynn since his days at LSU, but both proven me right so far this preseason.

The Russel Wilson era in Seattle has officially began!!!
