UPDATE: The deal that would have sent Chicago Cubs' pitcher Ryan Dempster to Atlanta is on hold, and might be dead. This could because Dempster has 10/5 rights and can veto any deal. The Dodgers are reportedly his preferred destination.

Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-US PRESSWIREThe Atlanta Braves acquired Ryan Dempster, the Chicago Cubs starter and one of the most-coveted pitchers on the trade market today, according to multiple reports.

All the details of the trade are still surfacing, but it appears as if one of Atlanta's top young starters, Randall Delgado, will be headed to Chicago in the deal.

The 35-year-old Dempster is having one of his best seasons as a pro. He is 5-4 with a 2.11 ERA, which leads the National League.

Delgado, 22, is 4-9 with a 4.42 ERA in his first full season in the big leagues. He is seen as a piece for the future for the Cubs.

Chicago is out of the playoff race, while the Braves trail Washington by 3.5 games in the NL East. If the season ended today Atlanta would be the second of two NL Wild Card teams and would play a one-game playoff against Pittsburgh to continue their season.

According to ESPN's Jim Bowden, the Cubs aren't done, and are looking to flip Matt Garza to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deal including prospect Zach Lee. That deal is not done by any means yet, however.

It is an interesting deal for Chicago, given that Dempster is having a career year in a contract year and Delgado is considered one of baseball's top prospects. That said, Dempster has been great this year, and even better (1.52 ERA) away from Wrigley Field. Don't be surprised, whoever, if this is seen as a coup for Theo Epstein a few years down the road.

For his career, Dempster is 117-120 with a 4.31 ERA.

As more details emerge, I will update this story.
