Canadiens defenseman Ryan O'Byrne has only one goal in his NHL career, and has none this season. Until last night, when he scored one for the Islanders. The goal, credited to Bill Guerin, tied the game for the the Islanders, and led to a shootout loss for the Habs.
The gaffe happened during a delayed penalty, when a mere touch of the puck by the Islanders would have meant a stoppage. As O'Byrne was trying to get away from Guerin, he appeared to be trying to pass it back to he goalie, but to no avail, as the goalie had left the ice in favor of an extra attacked due to the delayed penalty.
Tough break for O'Byrne, and great break for Guerin and the Islanders, who pick up a goal and a win that they probably didn't deserve. However, no need to shed a tear for O'Byrne. Habs fans will probably send him to the All Star game anyway.
