I listen to SIRIUS when I can throughout the day - because as you MIGHT have read previously, NASCAR is my sport. Even though there's no racing on right now (61 days until the Daytona 500) with our economy in the toilet, there so much happening every day (more on that later)So today, the announcers on SIRIUS 124 have been announcing that the Petty - Gillett merger is dead. (It seems Ray Evernham is out of the picture, so while it is technically Gillett Evernham Motorsports, look for that to change soon, too) GEM has laid off 39 people and Petty has also laid off a number of employees. The 10 car piloted by Reed Sorensen will run only a part time schedule and the GEM N'wide garage has been shut down. The people on SIRIUS say this, along with comments by a number of people in the know, indicates that the deal to merge has hit a brick wall. No one is announcing that on NASCAR.com, ESPN or FOXSports. So, if it does get announce in the next few hours, remember, you heard it here FIRST!
