Saints WR Joe Morgan arrested over weekend on DUI charge
Louisiana State Police Trooper Melissa Matey said on Wednesday Morgan was arrested Saturday around midnight in Jefferson Parish on a charge of DUI and driving with no license.
A state trooper initially discovered Morgan asleep behind the wheel in his parked on the Earhardt Expressway near Causeway Boulevard, and asked the player to step out of the vehicle.
Police reports state that Morgan appeared intoxicated as he got out of the car and swayed on his feet. The state trooper also noted Morgan smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes. After he failed all road sobriety tests, he was taken to the Jefferson Parish jail registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.218 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, according to the arrest report.
Morgan was taken to Gretna jail and booked on DUI charges and driving without a license. However, Morgan was released later that day after posting a $1,150 bond.
The Saints and Morgan refused to comment on the recent DUI arrest.
The 25-year-old Morgan originally signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Walsh University, an NAIA school in Canton, Ohio, in 2011. But Morgan did not play during his first year in the league after landing on the injured reserve with a torn meniscus in the preseason that ultimately required surgery.
Last season, Morgan caught 10 passes for 379 yards and three touchdowns, while appearing in 14 games with five starts for the Saints. Morgan also averaged 37.9 yards per catch, with eight of his first nine receptions covering 27 or more yards, including an 80-yard touchdown in a 27-28 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Week 4 last season.
Coming into the 2013 offseason, Morgan was a favorite to take over the Saints’ No. 3 receiver spot, with Nick Toon, Kenny Still and Preston Parker also in the competition. The Saints churned their depth chart at receiver this offseason when they opted not to re-sign starter Devery Henderson.
