Saints sign second-year safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to 1-year deal

The New Orleans Saints made some minor roster moves on Tuesday that primarily adds depth to their defensive backfield while also providing a punch on the offense. The New Orleans Saints signed free agent safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to a one-year contract.
 
The team also waived cornerback Ryan Steed to make roster room for Owusu-Ansah. The announcements were made by New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.
 
Owusu-Ansah appeared in 14 career games with the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars leading up to 2011. That season, Owusu-Ansah split time between the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars, appearing in seven games and two starts, while posting 14 tackles, four special teams stops, three kickoff returns for 56 yards and six punt returns for 47 yards.
 
Last season, Owusu-Ansah did not appear in a single game, after spending training camp with the Dallas Cowboys and then most of the regular season on the Oakland Raiders’ practice squad. Owusu-Ansah was released by the Oakland Raiders in early May this offseason. Since then, Owusu-Ansah has been a tryout player during offseason workouts for the Kansas City Chiefs this summer, and has now landed on the roster with his fifth team in three years.
 
The 25-year-old Owusu-Ansah, has played as a defensive back , wide receiver, and also returned punts and kickoffs during his NFL career. Owusu-Ansah has 14 career tackles (nine solo) and five special teams stops. He also returned 28 kickoffs for 599 yards (21.4 avg.)and brought back six punts for 47 yards(7.8 avg.) during his NFL career.
