San Diego Student Amuses, Toreros Advance to NCAA Tournament

(We Live Where You Spring Break)

Funny. And I hate you.

Also of note, the Toreros stole someone's bid last night by beating Gonzaga 69-62 to get the West Coast Conference's automatic bid. That doesn't bode well for the Syracuse, Arkansas, and Arizona State's of Bubbleville.

Awfully nice San Diego got home court advantage as the #3 seed. Explain that one, again. That wasn't the only bid stolen Monday night.

Mid Tenn St. 82, South Alabama 73 This isn't a lock, but the Jaguars appear to be on the favorable side of the bubble even with this loss in their conference semis. 24-6 record, 37 RPI, and they've beat Mississippi State. Sounds nice, but honestly isn't any better than Syracuse, Ohio State, etc. If the Jags get it, it's a move to favor the smaller conferences. I'm all for it this season.

George Mason 68, Bill & Mary 59 The Patriots are going back to the dance and I guarantee you they'll be making their opponent cringe on Sunday night. Two of the studs from '06 are still leading the way, Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell. Watch out.

Siena 74, Rider 53
I can see the Saints pulling off one of those Albany-like scares where they shoot lights out for the first 20 minutes and are tied with a 2-seed at halftime. They can shoot out and are athletic enough to hang on defense with the tops teams.

More fun tonight. IUPUI!

Glad to see I'm not the only one bothered by conference tournaments not being at neutral sites. San Diego gets to host and gets the a bid. For the Pac-10, the L.A. schools get home court advantage every year, meaning ASU has to play a road game at USC to try and get in.

Why not have both tournaments in Vegas?

Gonzaga, St. Mary's, VCU, and South Alabama all better make the dance.  They're all better teams than Miami, Maryland, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Florida etc. who have no business in the dance.

Its hard to avoid some kind of home court in the Big Conferences, but at least they aren't on the actual home court. If any conference is going to go that route, it'd better the #1 seed. In fact, I'd rather it be that way for all conferences. I think that'd be fun, but obviously money is the biggest player and if by chance Northwestern were to somehow win the Big Ten there'd be a major issue.

You really think VCU and South Alabama are better than those teams? I, too, would prefer they make the dance and they should just to give them a chance, but do you think South Alabama would have finished ahead of Syracuse in the Big East? Ahead of Ohio State in the Big Ten?

They have only one good win ... at home vs Mississippi State.

They couldn't fare any worse.  The Big East and Pac-10 were very tough this year, and the Big 12 was pretty good too.  However, the difference between the haves of the ACC, Big 10, and SEC, and the have-nots of those conferences are monumental this year.  I don't see why a VCU or South Alabama couldn't finish just as well in those conferences.

They can't  since the Mountain West has it booked.

It does come down to money and also what spot will draw fans and have rooms to hold those fans. Take the Mountain West for example, UNLV gets to play at home, but the conference wants to go to Vegas, and it knows it will have people travel and hotel rooms to put them in. Will people travel to Provo, Cheyenne or to Colorado Springs at this time of the year when it is still cold? Not saying those are not pleasant places, but does it have the same pull as Las Vegas (Three words people "Slots-O-Fun").

As for the smaller conferences, they plan their conference tournaments before the season and some years it works out others it does not. Is it perfect, far from it, but it works out for the most part.

Vegas has a few possible arenas though, plus there is the new arena on the way. How cool would it be if they made a week of it all and had 3 tournaments going on at once?

That would be really cool. Especially if you head on over to a sports book and gamble on watch all of the games at the same time.

Although I am very attracted to the thought of all that action going on at once. I think that might be too much for Vegas. Think of a tamer more of a frat prank version of NBA All-Star Weekend.

Also it would take weeks to clean out the sportsbooks from the carnage that would take place. Just think of Gladiator meets Thunderdome.

Nothing is too big for Vegas!

Think about it, how many guys would go there for Spring Break? It's already popular for the tournament, this would just extend that time longer.

The more I am thinking about this, the more I am convinced this is a great idea.

I say if they ever have all three in Vegas at one time, that we have that FanIQ convention around that weekend in Vegas.

Having 3 tournies in Vegas at once would either be the greatest week ever in one city or the biggest disaster in Vegas's history.
