San Francisco Giants Pitching Staff Best In Baseball, Bullpen Now Leading the Majors in ERA
In Case You Haven't Been Paying Attention, The Best Pitching Staff In Baseball Resides In San Francisco
If the season ended today, which National League team would be on their way to the postseason via the wildcard?

The San Francisco Giants. Their offense has very little to do with their current success as this team is last in the majors in home runs and 28th in runs scored. Thus their pitching staff, including a top notch bullpen, is the main reason they are in a fight for a postseason berth which far exceeds what most expected from this team.

Most would not have envisioned the Giants having the second best team ERA in all of baseball nearing the All Star break. San Fran’s team ERA is just 3.65 and they have allowed the fewest runs per game (3.8) in the majors this season.

On top of that, this staff has more strikeouts than any other team. The starting staff obviously has a stake in those imposing stats. Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum are both in the Top 10 in starter ERA. However, the bullpen has definitely held up their end of the bargain.

The bullpen numbers are actually more impressive than the starters. That’s because they have the best bullpen ERA in the league at 3.34. Opponents are hitting just .243 BA against Giants relievers. And while the starters have been solid for the most part, they have only 36 quality starts putting them in the middle of the pack in MLB. The bullpen has had to shoulder more than their share of the load this year.

The interesting part about this San Francisco bullpen is that their success has been built mainly with new faces. These well-traveled veterans have come into their own and pushed this team into second place in the NL West behind the red-hot Dodgers.

The most well-known pick up was Bobby Howry, who has posted decent numbers (3.91 ERA) but other under the radar signings have been more efficient. Jeremy Affeldt, who has pitched with  KC, Colorado and Atlanta, has been one of the best pickups in baseball. He has a miniscule 1.65 ERA in 32 appearances.

Justin Miller, who was with Florida the last two years, has been great with an ERA of just 2.27 in 25 appearances. Brandon Medders is another newcomer who took the mound for Arizona the last four seasons. His ERA is 2.97.

Those four have helped this San Francisco bullpen become one of the best in MLB. In fact, the only holdover that has had significant mound action this year, besides closer Brian Wilson, is Merkin Valdez.

If the newcomers continue their break-out seasons and the starting staff stays solid, this team should remain in the NL wildcard hunt. If the offense ever comes around, then the Giants will really be a serious threat.

One thing is for certain. Regardless or not if they upgrade the offense, no one is going to want to play the Giants in a 5 or 7 game series when we can throw out Lincecum, Cain, and Johnson. Even Barry Zito has enjoyed a rejuvenating season, and has showed signs of returning to his dominant ways.

I for one never doubted this for a minute, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this team do some serious damage in October this year. Stay tuned folks.

Even though I'm of course biased because I'm a Giants fan, I agree completely that if the Giants can get into the playoffs, they could be extremely dangerous. Their pitching staff and bullpen are ridiculous, and that's something you never want to run into in the postseason, even if the Giants can barely hit the ball out of the infield.

No, I'm responsible for featuring this. Pat is hitting you next with a Celtics article. Like you didn't see that coming.

You know better than that... I would never suck up to those fools.

Let's wait and see how wrong this article is when Smoltz, Buchholz, Penny and Matsuzaka are all competing for the Red Sox' last 2 rotation spots.

I would even argue that the Mariners have a better total pitching staff than the Giants. Their numbers aren't quite as good, but I think we all can agree that the AL lineups are considerably stronger.

I think they can be dangerous in the playoffs. Their pitching staff is great and bullpen but the offense can't be lame.

I don't know, take one good look at Tim Lincecum or Randy Johnson, and the word "steroids" doesn't exactly scream out.  Emaciated maybe...come on, both guys look like human stick figures!

I could put something together with PhotoShop, but I'm too lazy... so just picture Randy Johnson in an NBA uniform in your head. It's quite hilarious, especially with the mullet.

Oh I know it was made in jest...but it is definitely a miracle Johnson is still pitching at 45 years of age (mullet magic?), and Lincecum (who has never even really been hurt) can dominate as he does at a whopping 150 lbs soaking wet.  Really makes you wonder about how some of these guys are put together, especially when the DL fills up with different guys every week.

That works.

Sweet jesus is that mullet ever awesome.

Definitely true.  And in baseball, cheating has always been there throughout the sports' history, which is why I think it is kind of funny that the steroid thing is being beaten down so much.  But that of course would be mostly Donald Fehr's and Bud Selig's fault.  If they just came out and said "Hey look, we f***ed up, now we are both going to resign and go spend the tons of money we made off of the steroid era in anonymity," then people would probably ease up a bit on the topic.

The Giants hold the Wild Card and are 7.5 out in the West. Now if they want to make the playoffs they need to do better on the road and do better versus the NL West. Now they have the pitching to match anyone, but can they scrape together enough offense? The next couple of weeks will be interesting because if they can gain some ground or even stay at where they are will they look to make a deal?

And the more important question, do they trade a prospect (or two, three, etc.) away now for an immediate impact bat?  Since Bonds left, they have been building for the future, this season of course has gone a bit unexpected for them as well.  So do they sacrifice some of that future for what seems attainable now?  GM Brian Sabean will have his hands full in what is the last year of his current deal with the team.

Unexpected to people like you and Peppermint Patty. Not me.

For the record, Nima has been saying the Giants will be good for at least 3 seasons now. So while he has been correct (for the most part) this year, let's not forget that he said the same exact thing the past 2 years, when the Giants were on their way to consecutive 90-loss seasons.

For the record, what did I say about Lincecum, Cain, WIlson, Sandoval. Bonds breaking the homerun record? This success has been long overdue, and the future is very bright for us.

Your comments are hilarious. You have exactly 0 ability to see anything until after it develops. I see things well before they develop. You on the other hand, post your joke of a "power rankings" basically based on record alone. Any monkey can do that. Its really pretty sad.

You're very limited in your abilities and knowledge.

"You on the other hand, post your joke of a "power rankings" basically based on record alone."

Record has a lot to do with it, but you'll notice that it's not the only thing. But let's be serious... I would be irresponsible if I didn't take a team's record into account when ranking them, would I not?

"Any monkey can do that."

Then do it. Email me (pat@faniq.com) or post your rankings before 10am EST Tuesday morning, and I'll be more than happy to feature them.

The ball's in your court, chump chimp.

I knew all about the great Giants pitching staff...because I am on the Q! and Nima told me all about it in March! How likely is it that Sabean deals for an impact bat?

And yet you're too chickensh*t to put your rankings where your mouth is. Let me know when your balls drop and you're ready to post your own rankings. We all know what it's really about. You know that if you post your own, you'll have to either be honest and post rankings that are somewhat in line with mine, or take crap from the entire site when you post your insanity. And of course, we all know you can't handle criticism, so that's out of the question. Until then, your baseless smack talk is just sad.

I'll post my own rankings with an explanation for each team. But the day I send it to your email will be the day Lincecum gets knocked out in the second inning.

I will create a power ranking and post it on a blog. Then make yourself useful around here for a change and feature it.

Good for you Patricia. I can guarantee you mine will be much more sophisticated and more dependent on where the team will actually end up as opposed to what your simpleton, narrow minded brain is capable of accomplishing, which goes strictly off of current record. (Actually not even that good)Your rankings are ridiculous.
You had the Giants ranked 19th just a couple weeks ago you joke of a sports writer. I called you a joke then and I call you a joke now.

This comes as no shock to me, since a certain person always seems to keep me updated on all the happenings with the stinkin Giants. lol

The best pitching staff in baseball? They have two really, really, really good starters and total crap after them. How does that constitute a great pitching staff?

1) It doesn't go strictly off of current record. However, current record is the biggest factor.
2) Power Rankings are not intended to predict the results at the end of the season.
3) At the time, 19th was exactly where the Giants belonged. They have improved on the field since then, so they have improved in the rankings.
4) I knew you were clueless, but I had no idea it was this bad.

Do yourself and the rest of us a favor and shut the f up. You are repeatedly wrong and have proven you are worthless, just like your opinion.

Don't make me pull up some of the preseason blogs and comments to really embarrass your stupid ass all over again. You are seriously a clueless f'in joke.

If you read "each and every post" like you are claiming, how are you gonna say that "I backed down from his challenge".

I would really love to hear that one. Its right over your head for you to see, I don't even know what you are claiming, but its pretty damn funny to say the least.

I will do it and have them ready by Monday. Get ready for THE REAL FANIQ MLB POWER RANKINGS PEOPLE.

The people of Faniq have seen enough of this crap. Let someone who actually knows MLB do this. Not some insolent weasel of a Red Sox fan who is blind as a bat and whos IQ rivals that of a baboon on opium.

Damn its gonna be tough admitting the Dodgers and Red Sox are good teams, but for the best interest of the site I will post the teams exactly how they  REALLY are, all personal feelings set aside.

FYI, the Red Sox bullpen ERA right now is 2.99, while the Giants have a bullpen ERA of 3.38.

Just throwing that out there, to make sure that when Nima says the Giants have the "best bullpen ERA in the league", he means the National League only. The Red Sox bullpen has a better ERA against better hitters. Just throwing that out there.
