FanIQ | Sports Rumors, Gossip, Blogs, News & Discussion ForumsThere has been positive feedback from the Jets’ brass on Santonio Holmes’ progress in recovery this season, but the wide receiver himself paints a slightly different picture – one that seems closer to reality.
Jets general manager John Idzik said in a recent report that Holmes is close to returning and teammate Stephen Hill is also talking about how he is ready to play, but Holmes struck a less positive note when speaking with reporters on Wednesday.  Holmes claimed that even though there are reports out there suggesting that he apparently looks in great shape out there on the field, he still has a long way to go to make a 100 percent recovery.
"Looks can be deceiving," Holmes said. "I say that with a smile because if I actually look or felt as good as I looked, I would definitely be 100 percent ready. With that being said, looks can be deceiving."
Holmes recently told reporters that he had not yet begun running, but later that day a fan-made video surfaced – shot from the stands at Suny Cortland – that shows the receiver running at three-quarters speed on the sideline. Even better yet, Holmes was catching passes from quarterback Geno Smith in warmups before the team's second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. But Holmes cautioned not to read too much into such reports since they are often blown out of proportion, such as last week, all he was doing was running in a straight line.
"I probably ran two routes, which were the two passes that I caught from Geno on the deep-side, but everything else was walk, catch the ball on the sideline," Holmes said. "It wasn't really full-go. It wasn't planting and cutting the way I would like to, so at this point it's only making strides forward."
The 29-year-old Holmes also said that the pain in his foot from last year’s injury has not subsided yet. Every morning, Holmes said he wakes up to feel the pain in his foot,  but he is slowly learning to cope with it.
"I'm not able to be at Santonio Holmes' level of competition," he said, "so right now, it's just going with what I can give."
Holmes reiterated that he cannot say whether or not he will be healthy enough to play this season since there is no timetable for his return yet.
"I never had one from the start," Holmes said of his projected return date. "Coming off of injury, the first time, just letting the foot heal up and see where we can go from there."
