Saturday Conference Tournament Thread: Tornado Free Edition
Happy excuse to drink many beers day! Whatever it is you're doing, hopefully it involves hoops.

While a tornado tore through the SEC, a Hoffarber is ripping up the Big Ten Tournament. Illinois or Minny in the Big Dance? Sure, why not.

Mostly just seeding up for grabs today. Here's your big games:

Virginia Tech vs North Carolina (1:30, ESPN) Wouldn't be surprised with an upset, the way the Hokies played D yesterday.

Wisconsin vs Michigan State (1:40, CBS) Let's just hope for our eyes sake, the Spartans manage to score more than 40 points this time around.

Oklahoma vs Texas (2, ESPN2) I think A.J. Abrams should just starting pulling up from half court. I'm sure it's in his range.

Illinois vs Minnesota (4, CBS) Apparently the Illini prefer the double digit seeding. Illinois made it to the Big Ten Finals as an 11-seed

Stanford vs UCLA (6, CBS) Possibly the number one overall seed if the Bruins win?

Pittsburgh vs Georgetown
(7, ESPN) Starting to convince myself to stick with my original national champion pick in October. Seriously.

Cheers.

So here's a question to get the ball rolling. Which conference has worse officiating? Pac or Big 10?

I think Memphis just might win today.

I just got home and saw the score...Holy Cow!!!!  I almost dropped my very large banana split that I crossed three lanes of traffic at the last second to buy from the Dairy Kastle.

From what I saw of yesterday's games, the Big 10 officiating was awful (Bo Ryan's T, Ohio State parade of fouls within a minute), but I don't think they effected the outcome of either game, so I'd have to say Pac 10.

If Minnesota wins tonight, are they in the Big Dance?  I'd think they'd at least have to be considered.

If the Gophers win, sure its 22-10 record, a pretty bad schedule, but I don't see why they wouldn't be considered along with the 20 other schools right on the line..

Now; I do have them picked over Illinois today, so if they just so happen to make it to the Finals, and make a real game out of it with Mich. St/Wisc, it can only help their chances.

Also of note; CF said its a tornado-free edition today -- not so much.

I ended up being up till about 7am earlier this morning, and even then it was still storming and more of the same hard rain with strong winds around here. Right now; there are huge storms just north of the Atlanta area including more Tornado Warnings.

It is going steadily west to east, so hopefully the storm doesn't decide to dip down a little south or it would be right on top of the GT court...

How about the SEC in the equation after the Kentucky game

Upset alert: VT leading UNC 55-50 with 8:30 left.

Ugh, Trevon Hughes looks like he's hurt pretty badly.  The official did do a pretty solid job of protecting Hughes without penalizing MSU.

I wish I would've watched that game.  I heard there was a piss poor no-call at the end of the game.

Re:  Minnesota:  NO

They are #93 in the RPI and a 2-10 record against the top-100.  If they made an at-large bid, that would be one of the worst at-large selections ever, and I'm actually a fan of what Tubby's doing.  Nebraska has a better resume than Minny.

Also, the Pac-10's officiating has to take the cake this year.  It's been notorious the last few years with its home court biases, but it's glaringly bad this season.

Blah.

It's difficult watching any of these games.

VT/UNC isn't on ESPN for me, but on Raycom -- which means they can interrupt every 5 minutes on the storms around Atlanta, then its the same with CBS.

Ugh... MSU is doing everything right.  And now J-Bo might pull off a 4 point play.

Mostly a random thought, but I hereby nominate Mich State for the title of "most erratic team in the nation."  With that said, they are still my sleeper pick to go deep in the tourney.

Seriously, is there any other team that has been as up and down as the Spartans?

MSU might not have enough eligible players to finish this game.  Refs have been a bit too whistle happy.

Wow... I can't believe Bohannon missed both of those.  Possible regular season and post season Big Ten titles!

I am tired from celebrating Hansbrough's game winner.

I know people are going to, and currently are, make fun of his celebration running down the court while throwing his fist. Carter-esque much? Awful game all the way, couldn't make a lay-up, defense was really bad, refs (focusing on Hess) were just horrible, but I will take the win.

What a win for the Badgers. Surprised Neitzel went for the win instead of driving.

Great game and exciting finish to MSU/Wisconsin.

Now for the Main Event of Illinois/Minnesota.

I don't know how much of the game you were able to see, but MSU had all their bigs fouled out, so it was likely they'd lose in OT.  I was scared crapless though when he took that shot.

Possible tornado touchdown in same Phillips Arena/Dome area right now.

In GA Tech area, I'm getting major rain and some hail...just a couple miles north of GA Tech basketball court; it should just miss them.

Ohh, makes sense. I only watched from when the MSU player took a wild shot, then the two missed free throws, and of course the missed Neitzel three.

After watching thre MSU/Wisconsin game, by far the Big Ten

Well Oklahoma got smashed by Texas...wish I could have said I didn't see that coming.

Scary stuff in Atlanta though. Being from Oklahoma I know how bad/unpredictable tornadoes can be, so the fact that they are trying to play games is not wise.

Mike Patrick is having a Scheyer-gasm in the Duke/Clemson game.  Game is fast paced because Clemson is forcing the action but neither team can hold onto the ball.  Its rather ugly.

Edit: And now its Paulus-gasm.

These Minnesota missed FT and turnovers are giving me a bigger headache than the voice of this weatherman I have to listen to instead of the game...

Well Thank You Billy Packer.

"Its no question that the teams playing earlier were far superior than these two."

You actually think Mich. St. and Wisconsin is better than Minnesota and Illinois?

Stunned.

Why I can't pick Duke to go anywhere far this year in the Tourney...3-14 shooting from 3-pt land, and down 8 to Clemson.

Agreed. Duke will not win it this year because of the chance of a game where they can't hit a shot.

So Clemson beating Duke is the biggest win in the history of the Clemson program ever. I am sure there have been a few bigger wins in Clemson history Mike "I Love Duke More The Vitale" Patrick.

After the 10 min of BS to end the Minn/Illinois game, along with the Wisc./MSU earlier..It has to be Big 10.

Is there any doubt that the Pac-10 finals will go down to the wire with Gus Johnson doing play by play?

Tom Brennan is a classic old man. He refers to the storm as sympathy to get get to talk, he is asked about Lunardi's last 4 out, he says ASU should be in then Gotthief says he is missing it and Nova should be in so he says Nova should be in, then what ever analyst is on the right of Tom says that Gotthief shouldn't tell Tom that he is missing so Tom says that he should not be told what he is missing. Messy sentence and a simple case of an old guy who is tricked into saying what ever the person who tricked him wants him to say.

And sure enough, Pac-10 game went down to the wire with Gus Johnson on the call.

So if Illinois wins the Big 10, what seed would they get? I'd have to say no higher than a 13 or 14.

WAC Tournament championship is ridiculous.

Third overtime right now and Boise is up 2 with 2:30 left

Even if they pull off the win tomorrow, they'd still have a losing record.  I'd say 15, maybe a low 14.

Maybe the Play-In game?

I hope it doesn't end up even being an option, but that'd be awesome.  I believe that right now there's only one team in the tourny with a losing record so why not?

They could play Georgia after they win the SEC.

I don't think they'd be any lower than a 13 seed. They wouldn't put them in the play-in game. If I were a No. 1 seed and I got to play the winner of a BCS conference tournament instead of Robert Morris or Mt. St. Mary's, I'd be pissed. Not saying Illinois would beat UNC or UCLA, just saying they are much better than your typical 16 seed.
