The NFL's first coaching change of the year has finally happened. Not surprisingly, Scott Linehan has been fired as the head coach of the 0-4 St. Louis Rams. He will be replaced by defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, who has previously been the head coach for the New Orleans Saints, and had a 45-51 regular season record in 6 seasons. The Rams are arguably the worst team in football. They have given up more points than any other team in football (by 30 so far), and they have scored the fewest. The Ravens, not known for their offensive abilities, and led by a rookie QB, scored more points in 2 games than the Rams scored in 4. Their average margin of defeat is 26 points.
QB Marc Bulger and RB Steven Jackson had already spoken out against Linehan, and it was clear that he had completely lost the team. The only question was who would get fired first, Linehan or Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, who is almost begging to be fired at this point. In the end, Linehan won, and understandably so.It's not really reasonable to expect much out of Haslett, and there's no telling whether the Rams see him as the long term solution. But either way, this is an organization that has a lot of work ahead of them, and has taken one step in the right direction.
