FanIQ | Sports Rumors, Gossip, Blogs, News & Discussion ForumsThe Seattle Seahawks’ interest in unrestricted free agent cornerback Antoine Winfield seemed to be taking stronger roots after team reportedly drew ever closer to agreeing to terms with Winfield. Antoine Winfield visited the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday.
Antoine Winfield could join an already mean secondary featuring cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner playing outside, to go along with safeties Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas, if the deal falls into place.  The 35-year-old Antoine Winfield will presumably play at nickel cornerback if signed by the Seattle Seahawks, giving them potentially one of the best defensive backfields in the league. Winfield will likely compete for the nickel cornerback position against Seattle Seahawks’ Walter Thurmond and Will Blackmon. His addition could also mean that the Seattle Seahawks will no longer consider bringing back veteran cornerback Marcus Trufant.
However, Antoine Winfield is also receiving interest from the Minnesota Vikings, who released him last month. The Vikings have held every interest of re-signing Antoine Winfield, only to a cheaper deal. Before his release, Winfield was entering the final season of a five-year, $36 million deal with Minnesota, but was cut in a salary cap move.
Antoine Winfield visited the Washington Redskins last week, but a deal with the team is unlikely to happen due to the their tight salary-cap situation. Moreover, the Redskins also brought back their cornerback DeAngelo Hall at a reduced rate for 2013. Although the move doesn’t negate the Redskins’ interest in Antoine Winfield, it serves as insurance should the team be unable to land the former Minnesota Vikings cornerback.
The 14-year veteran Antoine Winfield spent the past nine seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. Last season, Antoine Winfield had 100 total tackles, three interceptions, half a sack and one fumble recovery, while starting 15 games for the Minnesota Vikings.
Originally selected in the first-round of the 1999 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills, Antoine Winfield spent the first five seasons of his career with the team, before signing as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2004. Antoine Winfield has 1,052 total tackles, 27 interceptions and 7.5 sacks during his NFL career. He made the Pro Bowl three-consecutive years with the Minnesota Vikings (2008-2010) and also appeared in the 2009 NFC Championship Game.
