The Seattle Seahawks did a little damage control on Wednesday, placing Steven Hauschka on injured reserve after he was expected to miss the rest of the playoffs with a leg injury. Subsequently, the Seattle Seahawks signed veteran Ryan Longwell to replace Steven Hauschka at place kicker for NFC Divisional playoffs against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
Steven Hauschka strained his left calf muscle in the second quarter of last Sunday’s 24-14 win against the Washington Redskins in the Wild card round of playoffs. The 27-year-old Steven Hauschka still remained after the injury to kick two field goals, for 22 and 29 yards in last weekend’s game. However, punter Jon Ryan had to handle the kickoffs after Steven Hauschka’s injury. Steven Hauschka made 24 of 27 field goal attempts in the regular season on a field goal percentage of 88.9.
Meanwhile, Ryan Longwell hasn’t played for an NFL team this season. Ryan Longwell made 22 0f 28 field goal attempts for the Minnesota Vikings last season, until he was waived by the team in March after they drafted Blair Walsh out of Georgia in the sixth round of last April’s drafts. The rookie place kicker Blair Walsh made 10 field goals for over 50 yards or more this season.
Ryan Longwell boasts an 82.3 career field goal percentage after making 361 of 434 field goals, playing nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers and six with the Minnesota Vikings. Ryan Longwell ranks top 11th place kicker in NFL history after amassing 1,687 points over a 15-year NFL career, while he is the 4th best on the active list.
The 38-year-old Ryan Longwell has beat four other kickers, including 13-year veteran and former Washington Redskins player Neil Rackers, during workout for the Seattle Seahawks to start at the spot.
The Seattle Seahawks made another roster move on Wednesday, signing defensive end Patrick Chukwurah after placing regular starter Chris Clemons on the injured reserve due to a knee injury.
Chris Clemons sustained an anterior cruciate ligament tear as well as the meniscus in his left knee during last Sunday’s win over the Washington Redskins. He ended the regular season on 11 ½ sacks.
Patrick Chukwurah has not appeared in a single NFL game since 2007 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 33-year-old Patrick Chukwurah briefly spent time in the UFL, where he led the league in sacks while with the Florida Huskers (2009-2010).
