Seattle Mariners Players Wanted To Hurt Ichiro
Mariners Players Want Ichiro To Get 200 Hits...To His Midsection
To say it's been a rough season for the Seattle Mariners would be an understatement. I think colossal season from hell is more appropriate. But I never thought it would get this bad.

Apparently, Ichiro is so unpopular in the Mariners clubhouse right now that some of his teammates actually planned on giving him the New Jersey special. Also known as beating the living snot out of him.

According to the Seattle Times Mariners blog:

A clubhouse insider -- sorry, can't get more specific than that, but the source is golden and others have confirmed his account -- says animosity towards Ichiro by teammates was so heavy in the first few months of the season that he feared the Japanese leadoff man was going to be physically attacked in the clubhouse. The coaching staff intervened and called a team meeting to clear the air over allegations Ichiro was a "selfish'' player. A similar meeting was called in May 2007 at Tropicana Field because of internal grumbling by players about Ichiro.

Apparently in the paper today there was even more on the situation.

John McLaren, the Mariners' manager at the time, reportedly intervened when he overheard a player talking about Ichiro, saying he wanted to "knock him out."

The reason why Mariners players are so pissed off is that they consider Ichiro to be solely focused on statistics, and not a team player.

Well, I have to be honest, when you're an All-Star and future Hall of Famer playing on a 100 loss team, would you be much of a team player? I sure as hell wouldn't be. I'd be doing everything possible to get myself traded, including pissing on Adrian Beltre's locker.

It's also bizarre that Ichiro is so unpopular in the Mariners clubhouse, especially since he's such a favorite in the AL All-Star locker room. Maybe Ichiro just doesn't tell enough foul mouthed jokes in the Mariners clubhouse. That's gotta be it.

Maybe Seattle has a bunch of morons that don't realize that everything good that Ichiro does benefits everyone else on the team.

Yeah that makes sense, beat up the only guy on the team besides maybe JJ Putz that hasn't phoned it in for the last 8 seasons.  Come to Boston for the springtime, Ichiro.  Join us and hit .400 in a Red Sox uniform.

Unless their offense has gotten better than when they played in KC earlier this year, maybe Ichiro should let them hit him.  The balls coming over the plate don't seem to scared.  Besides that just like their defense none of them could probablly catch him anyway.

Ichiro is safe, the way the Mariners have been hitting this year they would have missed.......

Hey... the Mariners are having a tough season, but to say all our teams suck here in Seattle is a bit uncalled for....

I think people often forget how relatively young Seattle teams are. Besides...once upon a time, people were saying similar things about Boston teams. Let's not be so harsh.

NOW  - this whole Ichiro thing - yea I don't know what's going on there. For all we know, there's a reason he's unpopular; there could be something going on behind the scenes that we're not seeing. The rest of the Mariners could all just be jerks too - all we know is what we're seeing in the media.

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts about the Mariners...I have no idea what the hell they were thinking, and I said as much when they made that deal. They're impatient with prospects but let the has-beens stay too long at the party.

By relatively young teams, I meant that the teams themselves haven't really been around all that long.

You're also right about the 'Hawks. I'm not too comfortable with what we have behind Hass (Wallace will never be starter caliber at QB, and Charlie Frye? Come on...). At LT, Jones and Womack are no spring chickens. But I have faith...call me a naive homer. Oh - and don't you ever breath the name Vince Young in the same sentence as my team again...and leave my Starbucks alone

Jealousy breeds contempt. It amazes me just how stupid the resy of the team is by wanting 2 do bodily harm 2 their best player. What a bunch of f'n losers

I agree on the NHL point.... Seattle is the perfect place for an NHL franchise.  The closest is Vancouver, which is across the border and a pain in the ass to get to, or in the states, the closest is LA/Anahiem/CO.... The NW needs more representation in the NHL
