The prodigal German Formula One driver, Sebastian Vettel is slowly closing towards another Championship victory. The 24-year-old Red Bull driver, who is considered as the only driver capable of breaking Michael Schumacher’s record of seven Championship titles, is closing in the gap on Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso to defend his Championship.
Sebastian Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber won the Monaco Grand Prix, which means the Australian has come up with six winners from six races. Later, Sebastian Vettel admitted that the Monaco Grand Prix bore fruitful results for Red Bull.
Sebastian Vettel also confessed that he would have liked to be on the podium of the Monaco Grand Prix but he was happy for his teammate Mark Webber. Sebastian Vettel explained that it wasn’t easy finishing with good points after starting from P9, which is a valid point.
Commenting on the strategy at the Monaco Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel revealed that utilizing tires to their best in the 78-lap race was the key to victory.
“When I saw the size of the gap I knew that every lap was super important and we were able to gain a lot of ground,” Sebastian Vettel said. “We managed to gain four to five seconds on the cars behind us, by using the same tires, but then the tires had probably lost some performance after 30 laps. We would have needed to extend our advantage by another four seconds in the first stint but that was just not possible with the condition of the tires at that time.
“We could have stayed out another one or two laps, before the first pit stop, but then we could have easily lost everything as well. So when I rejoined after pitting I was right in the middle of the leading pack, as I managed to get out right before Lewis (Hamilton).”
With a victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, Red Bull head to Canada as favorites. Their two drivers; Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel now posses 73 points on the overall standings which means they are positioned second and third.
Moreover, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are now just three points away from the leader Fernando Alonso. Sebastian Vettel admitted that the Championship was still wide open and that Red Bull could step in and grab it if they continued to perform outstandingly. Sebastian Vettel also took the opportunity to talk about the controversy regarding RB8’s floor.
“I am quite relaxed about this situation,” Sebastian Vettel said. “At the end of the day this is not in my hands. But I think we have a car that is designed according to the regulations. Otherwise we would not compete. Of course it is totally normal amongst all the teams to point out possible advantages or disadvantages to upgrade your own position.”
Sebastian Vettel also agreed that he was careful to pick points where he could. Although, Sebastian Vettel did not have a bright start to the season the German has been picking up points here and there.
“Yes, that is very true,” Sebastian Vettel confessed in an answer to a reporter. “It feels pretty good to at least bring home P4, considering that I started from P9! This translates into ten more points. When you look at qualifying it is not easy to say whether you’ll be able to be in the front or only at the back of the leading pack. Small details can make a huge difference this year. This season is still in its infancy - so a focus on the smaller details can definitely do the trick.”
