For whatever reason today's golf action just isn't as excited as I hoped, so I'm going to continuing reveling in Sergio Garcia's failures.El Nino was disqualified from the PGA Championship this afternoon after turning in an incorrect scorecard. Sergio does have a legit excuse, but ultimately he's to blame.
Garcia got the boot Saturday for signing an incorrect scorecard after the third round. In tournament golf, players keep each other's scores. Garcia's playing partner, Boo Weekley, put down a 4 for Garcia on the 17th hole when the Spaniard actually made a 5.I hate to laugh (not really) at other people's struggles, but this unfortunate lack of attention to detail so aptly defines Garcia's career. Sure, there's an easy excuse available (Boo did it!), and he'll likely go that route. But ultimately he needs to hold himself accountable.
It's the player's responsibility to ensure his scorecard is accurate before he signs it. Garcia didn't. And when the mistake was noticed in the scoring tent, Garcia had already left.
"It's my fault for putting the wrong score in, but it's his fault for not checking," said Weekley, who shot 5-under 65. "I just said 'Sergio, I put a 4 but in fact you had a 5.' He said, 'That just puts the icing on the cake."'
That was no more apparent than on the 18th hole today. After missing a short put, Sergio was left with essentially a gimme. Failing to give it the proper attention and alignment, Garcia missed again, following by typically staring down an apparent fan who distracted him on the crosswalk. Yep, definitely the fans fault that you missed a putt that should have been nailed blindfolded. (as you can see from the picture, the butterfly was also to blame)
TNT analyst Bobby Clampett said it best as Sergio left the 18th hole today: (paraphrasing) "Sergio has got to quit blaming others ... Once he takes responsibility, he'll start fulfilling his potential."
