Shaquille O'Neal Says Spurs Will Pay For Hack-A-Shaq This Year
Hey Shaq, How About Making Sure The Suns Aren't Trailing By 10 Points In The First Place

I love Shaquille O'Neal and very much hate the San Antonio Spurs, but I can't defend Shaq on his constant criticism of the Hack-a-Shaq.

O'Neal continues to speak out against the defensive strategy this week in practice and promises to make the Spurs pay this year.

"I was fine with that," O'Neal said. "It doesn't work. It may work in a series, but it's not going to get you to the championship. San Antonio tried it, but they went home a couple weeks after we went home. I just have to go to the line and make them pay. And I will.
"The only thing I call cowardly is when you're up by 10 and do it. That's a cowardly move. I didn't say nothing last year, but that's a coward move. They should really do something about that. When you're down, I can see using it as a strategy, but when you're up 10 to 15 points, there's really no need for that."

I see one easy solution to this so-called cowardly act. Don't get down to the Spurs by 10-15 points.

In this video above, which is clearly from a disgruntled Phoenix Suns fan, you'll see the Hack-a-Shaq strategy in its finest from last year's playoff series.

When it comes down to it, the strategy works. Plain and simple. So while I find it incredibly annoying and makes me loathe the Spurs even more, I can't call it cowardly if it wins basketball games.

Shaq's take: 'Hack' can be cowardly [AZ Central]

It works but I agree with the guy who made the video saying that it ruins a great game to watch by slowing it down and making it a free throw contest.
But does it really? And who's at fault? The game or the lack of fundamentals learned by today's players? Shaq and his fans can whine and cry all they want...learn to sink a frieking free throw and the issue disappears! If you can't do that, there's another brand of basketball out there that caters to those who can't learn the fundamentals!

It does work. In fact, it almost worked back in that classic Lakers/Blazers Western Conference Finals all those years back. Still mad as hell the Blazers lost that game 7.

Good point. The dancing chicken also kills me every time I see it.

I totally understand what you mean. It just makes for a difficult product to watch and enjoy. If I wanted to see someone foul on every play and miss free throws badly, I'd watch my 8 year old cousin play a game....The dancing chicken makes me laugh too.

Really I am just a fan of the fluidity of the game of basketball. It is the most fluid sport that we have and I love watching the up and down aspect of it. With the hack-a-Shaq, it really disrupts that fluid movement.

I am as big of a basketball fan as you will find but how about gutting up and getting a defensive stop instead of copping out and fouling someone who can't shoot free throws well.

Well, as EA Sports says, "It's in the game."

Just as long as this leads to Greg Popovich getting up at a rap concert and singing "Shaq, tell me how my a## tastes," I am all for it...

Interesting to see in the video that the Suns had most of the leads in the start of the video, and a few in the middle and end... so i don't see where he gets doing it even up 10-15 points. I don't even think i saw a clip of it with San Antonio up that much. It's all just more complaining and making himself feel good, even though he is on his career downslope. Each year he has more and more to say, and more stupid things. At least they got to game 5 in the West Finals. He was too busy planning a Kobe snack and a nickname...

I wonder if Pop has a patent on this defense?  I know he's in line for one on a free get out of jail card for the mugging Bruce Bowen does every night.  Throw that in with the auditioning for best whiner in the league on a nightly basis by Manu Ginobli and Tim Duncan and the Spurs have the gameplan to make every one of their games a 65-63 yawnfest.
