Shaun Alexander Can't Get A Job Because He's A Christian Says Orlando Sentinel Writer
Writer Says Alexander Can't Get A Job Because He's Christian. I Say It's Because He Sucks.
I guess during the slow months of the summer, the only thing you can do as a sports writer is make stuff up. Heck, I do it every day. But I don't usually do something this stupid.

Orlando Sentinel writer Shannon J. Owens decided that the reason why former MVP Shaun Alexander has been unemployed for the last two months is because he's too fervently Christian. What the hell?
Maybe if playing football was his only goal, some GMs wouldn't have called Alexander, 30, washed up.
Excuse me? You mean the guy that's averaged three and a half yards a carry the last two years - and who turns 31 before the season starts - isn't actually washed up? Because that last sentence I wrote sure makes him sound washed up.
Alexander said his critics, at times, have drawn wrong conclusions about his relationship with football because of his faith.

"Because I so don't carry football around everywhere I am, it kind of throws people off. They're never really sure," Alexander said. "I've never made football my identity, and that's where God has graced me."

This is ridiculous. I realize the NFL is filled with guys like Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, and various other shady characters, but if Alexander thinks he's the only holy roller in the league, he's badly mistaken.

Here are his stats from the past two years.

2006: 10 games, 896 yards, 3.6 yards per carry, 5 fumbles.
2007: 13 games, 716 yards, 3.5 yards per carry, 4 touchdowns.

This has nothing to do with Alexander's faith, and instead everything to do with him sucking. Period.

Of course this is true.  Everyone knows Christian can't get a fair shake in this country.  America would never elect a Christian as president.  Can you imagine the outrage if a bunch of football players got together for a prayer circle before and after a game?  Can you imagine the horror of a Christian QB won the Super Bowl?

Having been an avid reader of the Orlando Sentinel (or the "Slant-inel" as we like to call it) for 40 years, I can tell you that

I  agree Rich. I lived in Melbourne, FL and we got the Orlando Sentinal at times and it was by far the worst reading experience of my life. I'd rather read a paper on Quantum Physics done by a 4th grader. But Shannon J. Owens might write a peice on QP and use that paper as a "valid" source. So, lets spare that.

Shawn it might be because you are now a fervent fumbler.

A fervent fumbler of the first flight...

Without starting too much controversy, if it really is faith (and not performances) affecting his job status, then his problem might be tough to overcome.  Unless the NFL (and other leagues) stops being a secular entity, they will continue to want players focused more on football than anything else.  Just my take.

I'll be the first to admit that it's just time for Alexander to hang it up - he's getting up there in age (for a RB), he's afraid to be hit, he's got a few nagging injuries...it has nothing to do with his faith. I would think that the only time his faith might have even come into play is when he talked Holmgren into putting him back in too early back in 2006 because, according to him, God healed his foot and he could play.

Reggie White was an ordained minister and an open critic of homosexuals and managed to find work as an NFL player.  Despite his unpopular opinions and his fervent faith, he was still an effective player.  That's what it's about.  Once you can no longer play, you're gone, no matter how close to God you are.

This isn't about his faith.  It's about him being washed up in the league.  It would've come sooner had guys like Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson left earlier in his career.

Alexander bought into his own hype. Too bad he's not saying this in his MVP season, maybe more people would've prayed more attention to him.

PQ my bad

LOL he did talk him into it - Holmgren said he wasn't ready to play, and I remember a story about Alexander jumping up and down saying "look, it's healed, see?" and mentioned that God performed the miracle. I remember this because I rolled my eyes and said "is he friggin serious?" And, not to poke fun because that's not what it's about, it just seemed so hokey I just kept thinking about this.

I just remember how he cried because he didnt get the carry or extra yard to be the NFL rushing leader.  I mean, I liked the guy was hardcore then became just that the core of the apple, the only thing thats left after all is taken, or bitten off... The Core.

What happened to this guy. In '05 he was carving up. now he fumbles the ball. but lets be honest. he wasn't that good a back, he just had good linemen. when you have linemen creating you great holes how can you not be good. But this be the madden curse aswell.
