The lights are almost out on Shawne Merriman's 2008 season. After getting a second and third opinion, he returned to the Chargers and reported he had not only torn his lateral collateral ligament, but his posterior ligament as well. For most of us that means instantaneous surgery before resuming any athletic activity. Merriman is still considering playing.
"I'm just trying to get an opinion on what I need to do, how bad the injury is and if I can do anything to play," Merriman said. "I'm going to do the best I can to get back on the field and get ready for Carolina."
Must be taking some serious steroids now. That, or he will be.
As it stands now, he plans to play the season opener and take it week by week.
With his contract set to expire, I can't imagine Merriman risks a career threatening injury to play this season. No chance he plays this year, but nice of him to show he's not completely writing it off. Then again, sitting out this whole year could lower his potential earning value next offseason.
Either way, the Chargers aren't getting a healthy all-pro linebacker and that could very well jeopardize a return trip to the playoffs for San Diego.
