Shovel Boy's NFC Pro Bowl Roster

12/27/12 in NFL   |   Matthew_Shovlin   |   735 respect

The Pro Bowl roster was announced on Wednesday, and as always, there is plenty of controversy among who was picked and who was left out. I think the team looks pretty good, but there were some excluded players that I felt deserved the trip to Hawaii. Here is the roster I would have picked for the 2012 NFC Pro Bowl team:

(Changes are in bold... If a player has a * next to his name, that means I agree that the player deserves his Pro Bowl selection, but that there is another player [in parentheses] who is about equally deserving)

Shovel Boy's NFC Pro Bowl Team

Running Back: Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Doug Martin

My Changes:

Frank Gore replaced by Doug Martin. Martin has ran for 166 more yards than Gore this season as the Buccaneers' true feature back, and has done so at just .3 yards per carry less than Gore. Martin has also scored 10 touchdowns to Gore's 7. The biggest reason I added Martin, however, was that he has caught 45 passes to Gore's 25. Martin is one of three 1,000 yard rushers with 40+ catches.

Julio Jones/Victor Cruz replaced by Dez Bryant. Bryant has more receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns than both of the NFC's reserve wide receivers. I guess maybe his attitude got him bumped from the squad, but he's an enormous part of why the Cowboys have a shot at the playoffs, and for that he deserves a Pro Bowl selection.

Julio Jones/Victor Cruz replaced by Roddy White. I know Julio Jones gets a great deal of the attention in Atlanta, but White is the more consistent and reliable receiving option. He's caught 5+ passes in 11 of their 15 games, and has 100+ yards in seven games. Jones has caught 5+ balls in ten games and has 100+ yards in four. White has caught 11 more passes for 167 more yards than Jones, and is better than Cruz in both of those categories as well.

Trent Williams replaced by Matt Kalil. The fourth overall pick has been as advertised for the Vikings, keeping pass rushers away from Christian Ponder and blowing open holes for Adrian Peterson. Kalil had given up only one sack through his first 13 games (I'm not sure what he's at now), keeping big names such as Aldon Smith (19.5 sacks) and Chris Clemons (11.5 sacks) from sacking his quarterback.
