Sir Alex Ferguson asks Wayne Rooney to score more goals for United
Sir Alex Ferguson has encouraged Wayne Rooney to score more goals for Manchester United. The Old Trafford boss believes the 27-year-old Englishman can become one of the leading goal-scorers in the Premier League this season.
Wayne Rooney answered his manager's goalscoring appeal by scoring a brace in Manchester United’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Reading on Saturday night. After the game Sir Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports Wayne Rooney needed to play an attacking role more often as time off wasn't good for his ‘frame’.
“Wayne is going through a period like all strikers do, he is not scoring,” Sir Alex Ferguson said. “He has missed bits of games and been off with tonsillitis, and Wayne is the type of player who can't miss games because of the frame he has got.”
The England international hasn’t been a regular goalscorer for Manchester United this season. As a matter of fact Wayne Rooney has had more assists than goals. Presently, he is Manchester United's leading assist provider.
Due to the lack of mature creative midfielders, Sir Alex Ferguson has preferred to deploy Wayne Rooney in the attacking midfield. The Scotsman decided to mix it up against Reading by giving Wayne Rooney a free role in diamond formation.
“I am happy with that part of his game,” Sir Alex Ferguson commented on Wayne Rooney’s superb improvisation and attacking performance. “If he can contribute to the team’s success, fine. But we would rather he scored more obviously.”
Wayne Rooney, who scored 34 goals as a lone striker for Manchester United during the 2009-10 season, has taken a back seat since the arrival of Robin van Persie from Arsenal. The Dutchman has been in fine goalscoring form for Manchester United this season.
Time and again Sir Alex Ferguson has declared that Manchester United is not a one man club. However, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have been hailed as saviors one too many times this season.
In spite of his claims, Sir Alex Ferguson is happy to see Robin van Persie perform for Manchester United regularly and believes giving him the in-front of the goal role is the right decision.
“He [Robin van Persie] has experience and now our players are starting to realize how good he is. We are getting more aware of the runs he is making and the movement he has up front. Hopefully that understanding gets better,” Sir Alex Ferguson said.
