Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are equals when it comes to distinguishing the best player in the world. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s crown jewel Lionel Messi are nominees for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award once again this year.
Last year, Lionel Messi thwarted Cristiano Ronaldo to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for the second successive year. The Argentinean football prodigy is the hot-favorite once again, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s feats from last could help the Portuguese win his first FIFA Ballon d’Or award.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who worked with Cristiano Ronaldo six year at Manchester United, has a soft spot for the 27-yer-old Portuguese forward. The Old Trafford boss has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a son and the player he desperately wants to re-sign. Manchester United sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world record breaking £80 million in the summer of 2009.
Sir Alex Ferguson is aware of the unresolvable comparisons between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Scotsman has backed his former player Cristiano Ronaldo to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award, yet he believes Lionel Messi is just as good as the Portuguese football icon.
“There is nothing between the two of them, they are both the best players in the world,” Sir Alex Ferguson told The Sun.
“There will always be great players. You can go back to the 60s with Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Eusebio. Going into the 70s you had Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer and then in the 80s Marco van Basten.
“I think what we are seeing at the moment is that Messi is an exceptional player from this decade, along with Cristiano.
“I don't think the rivalry against each other bothers them. I think they have their own personal pride in terms of wanting to be the best and I certainly know that about Cristiano because he played here at United for six years.”
Sir Alex Ferguson might get the chance to meet with Cristiano Ronaldo in the potential Champions League match between Manchester United and Real Madrid. The mouth-watering draw for the Last-16 bout will take place on Thursday.
