Smoke Signals: The middle aged women crush on Jason Taylor edition

Subbing in for Spence today. Out in urban Bethesda he is without internet service temporarily.  Go figure.  So here in Central Pennsylvania, with out reliable and dependable high speed internet, comes the Smoke Signals news report.

Jason Taylor seems to be settling into the DC digs just fine, although he appears to be most recognizable right now with middle aged and older women.  Buy hey, he is getting more recognizable with fellow DE Andre Carter as well.  That’s a good thing.  Taylor is also enjoying the DC area, but is a little surprised at the attention being received because of his willingness to flip end sides.

As we reported last night in out Erasmus James post, Laron Landry will not see action on Saturday.  I tend to believe Landry’s hammy is likely peachey-keen, but the Redskins are playing it safe, not wanting a re-aggravation this close to 9/4.  Seems Justin Hamilton is making a push for a roster spot.  Alfred Fincher, another late add, has looked pretty good at times to.

Matt Terl from the official Redskins blog reported from yesterdays practice.  A good piece of insight is that Carlos Rogers looked well in practice yesterday, showing some closing speed, something we have been looking for.  Rogers speed is one of the number one things to look for after coming back from a pretty bad knee injury.  He also notes, something we picked up in the NY Jets game, that Billy McMullen is dropping a bit.  Dropped passes don’t endear very well to coaches, especially the lingering recent memories of recent years past when the Redskins were plagued with dropped passes.  Even though Anthony Mix has not been on the field because of injury, that likely benefits him.  He will get some stronger due consideration because of his excellent special teams play last season.  Finally, nice piece by Terl on the goings on and preparation for broadcasting from Carolina.

Nice try Rocky.  Seems McIntosh flipped jerseys with Khary Campbell to possibly avoid media attention, but it didn’t work completely.

“I was Khary for a little minute but you guys got me,” said McIntosh, his face creased by a wide grin. “I’ve got to find something else for you.”

One good thing is that McIntosh is not hesitating and is playing hard.  It will be needed.  He was a key component of the defense before his injury, and will be expected to be one in 2008.

“He stepped right up there and took people on,” Zorn said of McIntosh. “I don’t think he shied away from anything. I think it’ll take two to three games to get the instinct back. But when the play comes right at him, that’s easy to read. He’s right on top of it and he’s enjoying it.”

McIntosh “got in a lot more action” than Rogers did, Rogers said. He “got in on some tackles, so he had a big test for his knee.”

Checking around the Redskins blog world;

Skins Patrol at Hogs Haven has it right from my perspective.  He argues that Darrell Green is not the best franchise player ever for the Washington Redskins.  I concur.  He argues for Redskins great Sammy Baugh.  I concur again.  Not only is Baugh the best franchise player ever, but hes is one of the NFL’s all time greats.  But hey, have your say, vote in the poll right here on the main page to your left.  Ben Folsom at Curly R agrees as well.  Trifecta!

Lee Gibbons at Redskins Report questions the Redskins linebackers.  He brings up two decent points, age and injury.  I worry more about Marcus Washington than London Fletcher.  From what I have seen of Fletcher in pre-season and reports from camp, his age will not be an issue, he  is still ripping around the field, side to side, with power and speed.  McIntosh will be a question mark until he plays a full game without any lingering effects.  Doesn’t help at all that HB Blades has been out injured.  Personally, from what I have seen, Matt Sinclair has been rather unimpressive to me.

Homer McFanBoy has a new designed blog up,.  Check it outOm has a piece up on putting the pre-season success into perspective.

Next up are the Carolina Panthers, on the road, in what tradition dictates is the one game in preseason teams do tend take a little more seriously. You tell me, fellow football fan … after the Jets performance, are you not right back where you were before the Indy game, before the team sprinted out and exceeded all expectations the first two weeks? If you’re anything like me (and you have my sympathies if so), you’re right back at square one, with no feel at all what kind of team you expect to see.

Good point.  The Redskins seem to have a let down against the Jets, not just in terms of production, as in yards and points, but in speed and basic fundamentals like tackling.  Just a sloppy, off game?  Possibly, but I can certain assure you that Redskins nation will be watching a rebound quite closely.

Burgundy Army puts up his final 53 projection.

And Rich Tandler brings us the whole way back to none other than Babe Laufenberg.  Good read!
