As usual, Clinton Portis didn’t practice yesterday. This seems to be a big story in the local media, though I’m not sure why that is. John Riggins would often skip practice to rejuvenate his battered and aching body. Portis is doing the same. No big deal as far as I’m concerned.
“It’s always the same with running backs,” said Portis, who has not hidden his disdain for practice even when he has been physically sound. “Just fight through, find a way to get to the game. This ain’t nothing new for me. Every year you’re fighting through it. Every year when I wasn’t practicing there was something wrong with me.
“I know people thought I was just sitting out and doing nothing. I came and played [in games], but ask any running back in the NFL if they banged up. When you go and give it your all on Sunday, you really don’t recover [until] Wednesday, Thursday, where you start feeling like you can do something.”
Nothing needs to change on this front. The Redskins rush for over 139 yards per game, 5th best in the NFL. Nevertheless, they score less than 18 points per game, 28th in the NFL. Thus, you know where the problem is, in the passing game. As long as Portis is producing, don’t worry about when he rests and when he practices. He keeps bringing it on game day and that’s what truly counts.
On the injury front, DE Andre Carter is a game time decision for Sunday night, but Head Coach Jim Zorn is confident MLB London Fletcher will play his 132nd straight game. CB Shawn Springs is questionable, but it seems more likely than not that he’ll be available to play. Expect G Pete Kendall and LT Chris Samuels to play, as well, though neither practiced yesterday.
So, whatever happened to that guy who played tight end for the Redskins? What was his name again? Liked to bang cheeleaders. Took a photo of his weiner and posted it online. Oh, yeah — Chris Cooley. Whatever happened to that guy? He was pretty good. Caught a fair number of touchdown passes.
