Santonio Holmes, one of the guys you never go to for a great quote, was being interviewed yesterday and happened to give his two cents about the New York media. For those of you who missed his quote, this is what he wants the media to report on, “If you guys want to be, and this is for the New York media, if you guys want to be a part of our team, and feel so important, be there to support us and not break us down. Write positive things, stay away from the negative because it doesn't do anything good for our team that you want to report all the negative things that happen and that's all you want to talk to us players about. We live for one thing and that’s to play football not to entertain you people in the media.”Don’t get in any trouble with the law, don’t say silly things, don’t rip on your own team, and don’t make ridiculous super bowl guarantees. That is how you will stay out of the media in a negative aspect. No one every rips on Eli Manning. He is media gold, a smart guy who wins and doesn’t get in trouble.
Here are some tips for you Mr. Holmes. For one thing the media does not care whether you win or lose. Some people like watching you play but if you played football on another planet it wouldn’t impact the media’s life any differently than it does right now. The Jets could trade you to Mars and it wouldn’t impact the media’s life one bit. Secondly, Santonio, you don’t sell papers and you don’t improve the ratings on television or radio. The last time that a wide receiver was featured on the front page of a newspaper was over three years ago. If you want to sell some papers then go fire a handgun in a crowded bar and follow the footsteps of Plaxico Burress.
This idea that the negativity is the number one thing that sells news and drives ratings is absurd. I will say this with 100% confidence that every other sports writer will back me up on. The number one thing that sells and drives ratings is winning. Winning is the most important thing for the media. Look what happened to the sales of newspapers during the Giants’ playoff run. Look what happens in New York during October when the Yankees are in the hunt. Sales go through the roof at times like these. People can’t wait to go and buy the paper when their team is winning.
The job of the media is to cover the team. Not to stand around and wave pom-poms and cheer for that team. When Santonio stands on the ball and costs his team 15 yards, when he drops open passes, and when he calls out his offensive line, it’s not the media’s job to support the cause; it’s their job to report on the cause. So if you don’t want negativity being reported about the Jets, stop doing negative things.
How Santonio Holmes fails to see the hypocrisy here is beyond me. You don’t get to say whatever you want to the media and expect them not to report on it. All it takes is a quick stroll through memory lane to remember how much of a cancer he is to this team. He is the problem here in New York. The media loves the Jets. Readers click on stories about the Jets just to see what idiot thing is happening today. The ultimate irony here is that it is happening right now, because of some ridiculous comment by whom else, but Santonio Holmes.
