South Florida the Latest Highly Ranked Team to Fall, Rutgers Wins 30-27

Chris Fowler ended the broadcast by saying that "Rutgers is getting used to the big game atmosphere." Uh, not really. They dumped Gatorade on their coach, and rushed the field after beating a team that prior to this season hadn't accomplished a whole lot.

As far as the game, it was a whole lot of Ray Rice and far too numerous Bulls mistakes. We're talking 10 penalties for 99 yards, 1 interceptions and Matt Grothe hanging onto the ball far too long resulting in 7 sacks with most of those resulting in double digit losses. That was too much for South Florida to overcome, resulting in a 30-27 loss.

It was a fun dream, but South Florida wasn't the second best team in the country. Credit Greg Schiano for pulling out two trick plays which ended up making a substantial difference.

This is the beauty of college football; you have to bring it for 13 weeks. South Florida's off week negates any chance of a title game appearance, but the Big East title and BCS berth are well within reach. Each of those would still be a ridiculous accomplishment for the football program.

Now it's up to Michigan State to make it a #1 and #2 flop for the second week in a row. I'm certain that's never happened.

Sweet, so you think Kansas will go 12-0?

USF was over-rated as is BC.  OSU still has to prove themselves.  If Kansas wins out, I will have to give them their respect, but they still have to win the big one.

I'd be hard pressed to love Kansas too much (although 12-0 is 12-0). They get the huge benefit of the three teams they don't play this year being Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. That's a really nice gift.

KU will have to win the Big XII Championship to be considered in which they willl have to play one of the big boys.

I agree with you.  The big one will prove that.

I still don't get how people are so quick to discredit USF.  Were they the 2nd best team in the nation? Highly unlikely, but they won at Auburn (who went on the road to beat Florida) and they beat West Virginia.  They only other team in the nation with better wins than that is LSU who has beaten Florida and Virginia Tech.

Because Rutgers was unranked and USF should have rolled through them.  How does a team that beats Auburn and WV struggle with Elon and lose to an unranked but worthy Rutgers?

Where does Elon come into this picture?  Anyway, USC lost to one of the worst teams in D-1 football.  Why are they still legit?  Rutgers is a good team as well.  Good defense, and a good running game is going to win a lot of games.  Thats Rutgers in a nutshell.  Anyway, to answer your question... How does a team that beats Auburn and WV lost to Rutgers?... because they outplayed Auburn and WVU but got outplayed by Rutgers.  The same thing that happens to countless other teams every single year.

Elon was D-IAA and they only lost by 2 touchdowns.  USF should have annihilated them.  Then again, Michigan should have done the same to App. State.  From what I say last night, they aren't as good as they were hyped up to be.  I was expecting more and was left scratching my head.  I was not impressed.  The defense caused turnovers, but the offense failed to truly capitalize on the them.  Their offense, was completely dependent of Grothe, no running game other than him.  He is severely talented and they are talented team.

I never discredited them, I just stated that they were over-rated.  Now, if they can win out and win the Big East, then win their BCS Bowl game, then they are worth the hype and are deserving of the #2 ranking they received, then I will give them their due. Otherwise, they were over-rated and needed to prove themselves a bit more with an even tougher schedule.  I do not jump on bandwagons, not saying that you have, but I am way to cautious before I label them the next USC of 2004, 2005.
