Sports Illustrated ranks top QBs, places Tom Brady 4th

Doug Farrar trolls everyone by ranking Tom Brady 4th among NFL QBs

Mandatory Credit: Robert Mayer-USA TODAY SportsSports Illustrated's Doug Farrar put together a list ranking the quarterbacks in the NFL, and to be honest, the list is not that bad overall. However, as the Sports Illustrated Facebook page notes, saying that the top 3 may surprise you, Farrar definitely takes some liberties with the #3 ranking.

No matter who you talk to, a vast majority of intelligent NFL observers will tell you that the best QBs in the game are (in some order) Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady. To the informed and educated, that's not really up for discussion.

You can probably mess around with the order a little bit (personally, I'd say it's Rodgers, Brady, and then Manning), but there's really no doubt that those are the league's 3 premier quarterbacks.

Farrar, however, has Drew Brees ranked 3rd ahead of Brady.

I'm not going to try to say that Drew Brees is a bad QB. Clearly he's one of the better QBs in the league, and I would place him solidly in 4th, behind the aforementioned three. He's very good, but I think he's clearly a step behind the top 3 in the NFL.

Perhaps Farrar was just impressed by Brees' gunslinging last year. After all, Brees led the NFL in all of the volume stats, including passing yards, TDs and interceptions.

But that's exactly what Brees is, and what he has been. Again, I'm not saying he's a bad quarterback. He's very good. But his game has been one of volume over efficiency, particularly when compared to guys like Rodgers, Brady, and Manning, who are just as adept as Brees at finding the end zone, but are a lot stingier with the football when it comes to throwing interceptions.

Nice try, Doug Farrar, but we're going to have to call you out on this one. You stirred the pot, you made us mention your name and your silly list, so congratulations on that. But we're not stupid. We won't fall for this one.

Well, I'd say Farrar should have objective analysis on his side as an ex-Football Outsiders guy, but he also was at Yahoo, meaning there's the sensationalistic side there too. *shrug*

The biggest difference between Brady and Brees is that Brees throws about 30% more interceptions. Otherwise they're nearly identical. I'll take Brady, easily.

In my opinion:
Of current QBs, Rodgers is #1 by a pretty wide margin.
Brady and Manning are 2/3, and the order is debatable.
Brees is 4, and there's a significant dropoff after that.

Did you just say...in your opinion...that the order is debatable with Brady and Manning at 2/3?

*faints*

(I'm kidding, of course...sometimes I don't think you get enough credit for objectivity)
