Sports Tonight: Renamed to ACC Beats Big Ten Exhibition
READ MORE:

It's the last night of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and the first night of Jimmy V on that four letter channel. So get ready to see Valvano's speech more times than you'll witness a Big Ten win. They'll have to sweep the matchups tonight to claim their first victory in the challenge. Unlikely, but the NC State-MSU and UNC-Ohio State games should be a little more competitive than what Wisconsin and Duke offered Tuesday night.

N.C. State at Michigan State (ESPN, 7 p.m.)
Massachusetts at Syracuse (ESPN Classic, 7 p.m.)
Illinois at Maryland (ESPN2, 7:30 p.m.)
North Carolina at Ohio State (ESPN, 9 p.m.)
Virginia Tech at Penn State (ESPN2, 9:30 p.m.)
Along with college hoops, feel free to Q up any other topics throughout the night.

Bottom of the Big Ten IS just horrid. But I agree with Seth in that all other conferences would look this bad against the ACC from top to bottom. Because the Big East has 74 teams, they probably have the best matchup 1-11 with the ACC.
74? So, you're counting DePaul?

I hate ESPNU what a stupid channel. If it wasn't on that channel, I could have atleast paid 4 bucks to watch BC/Michigan online.

Your telling me. ESPN pisses me off with half the games they choose.

I'm watching the Illinois-Maryland game and it has started out pretty ugly.  From the "some things never change" department, Brian Randle already has 2 fouls before the first TV timeout.  He's a 5th year senior and he still hasn't figured out how to stay on the floor.

I think this will be the game of the night, though.  It will be fun to see how this develops now that both teams have started to hit some of their shots.

Wisconsin thanks North Carolina State for taking the most embarassing loss of the challenge by the throat and never letting go.  Stay strong guys, its all yours.

While I appreciate the optimism, I just can't view it as a good sign when Dick Vitale declares that Ohio State will beat West Virginia for the national championship.

Ohio State is going to be tough this year.  Granted they got lit up by aTm, but I think that says more about aTm than Ohio State.  I really hope Ohio State wins this. Even though the ACC has killed the Big Ten in the Challenge, this win would give quite a bit of credibility to the Big Ten.

How would this give any more credibility to the Big Ten?  I think the general perception (mine anyways) is that the Big Ten has 3 teams that are either pretty good and/or talented.  This game would just confirm that Ohio State has the talent, but is very young, hence the differing play against aTm and UNC.

The other perception is that the rest of the conference is not very good, and that's probably being too polite.  I think this challenge has just confirmed what most of the nation thinks about the Big Ten.

And I definitely agree about the aTm game saying a lot;  I was stunned to see that result because I just didn't think they had the backcourt to play that well.

ETA: It wasn't an eye-opener to me, but I suppose Purdue's game may have been an eye-opener to folks around the country.  That team has a lot of young talent and a really good young coach.

Here's what this challenge tells me.

1. The ACC is usually the best conference in college basketball. In other words, they would be dominating the ACC/SEC, ACC/Pac Ten, and ACC/Big XII challenges too. (I'd be a little interested in ACC/Big East though)

2. The Big Ten has some very good teams at the top, usually every year, but the reason they can't win this challenge is the bottom half can't compete with the botom half of the ACC. The Big Ten will get teams to the final four, even win an occasional title, but they don't go 11 teams deep.

Agreed and agreed.  The bottom of the Big Ten is just soooo bad every year that you can't just look at the numbers in this challenge.

But if you look at it practically, if Ohio State were to go ahead and win, the Big Ten's 3 best teams will have won their games in this challenge.  All had homecourt advantage as well, but a win is a win.

ACC/Big East would be insane. And it could bring in so much money and televising it would be a romp.

And it would work out great with the Pac Ten starting to play the Big XII, the Big Ten then could switch and play the SEC, and then I think we would have 3 little tourneys that could actually be won by either conference in any given year.

I don't know where else to discuss this, so I'll post it here...

St. Louis U. (SLU to people familiar) lost to Kent State by...wait for it...41 points. 41 POINTS!!! What the heck is Rick Majerus doing there??? Maybe the cupboard was bare, but come on! Kent State better be one helluva team to justify a 41 point debacle.

Wow. Hadn't noticed that score yet tonight. That's ... just wow. Kent State is usually a decent MAC team as we've seen from the NCAA tourney run, but they have no business beating what's usually an OK St. Louis team by 41.

I still think Rick Majerus is a good, if not great coach. He's a little more old school in his teachings so it's not surprising the players haven't bought in. Watching SLU over the last couple years, they didn't seem to play with a lot of sets. Majerus is all about X's and O's.

I'm not sure how familiar you all are with Charlie Coles of Miami U, but his system works well at the mid-major level and I think Majerus given time (by the AD and his heart) will be wildly successful.

I agree that's probably the best approach. Although I'd prefer that they merely fix the scheduling of the challenge. It likely won't change the outcome but at least it'd be more compelling.

This year's matchups should have been:

Michigan State - Duke / Indiana - UNC or vice versa
Ohio State vs NC State
Wisconsin vs Georgia Tech
Illinois vs Maryland (got that one)
Purdue vs Virginia
Michigan vs Clemson
Minnesota vs Boston College
Penn State vs Wake Forest
Iowa vs Virginia Tech
Northwestern vs Florida State
