Cold as "Puck"

Jan 29, 2014; New York City, NY, USA; Fireworks go off as the New York Rangers celebrate after defeating the New York Islanders 2-1 in the Stadium Series hockey game at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY SportsLast night I attended the Rangers-Islanders “hawkey” game, only it wasn't at the Garden or the Coliseum, it was outside at Yankee Stadium. With this new Yankee Stadium being in its infant stages I wanted to be able to tell my kids that I got to see hockey at the stadium, just like my parents and grandparents saw a Pope, boxing, etc at the old stadium,

Bundled up in at least 12 layers I stood outside waiting for Derek Jeter to lead the Yanks out onto the field. I was of course wrong and it was Henryk Lundqvist leading the Rangers out onto the ice against the rival Islanders. I hoped around and yelled and did basically anything that would keep me warm. Once the game started I was hypnotized by the fact that hockey was being played in the cathedral of New York baseball.

It was great to see New Yorkers roaming the stadium, yelling at each other but yet embracing the fact that for the most part they all root for the same---more relevant teams(Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants). One of my favorites parts of the night was seeing Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabakov wear a snow hat on top of his mask, quite hysterical to me. The Islanders struck first leaving me and my fellow Rangers fans yearning for a few more sips of beer. But only a few minutes later, in classic Islanders fashion, the Rangers tied it up at one. We hollered at Islanders fans as if we just won the cup, if only....

Overall, the NHL has been doing a good job with these outdoor games, fans seem to enjoy them despite freezing temperatures and it brings attention to a sport that should be getting more attention, but doesn't. One thing is for sure, New Yorkers are passionate about their hockey. I did not expect the stadium to be as filled up as it was. The game was great, all 60 minutes of it, and if you are looking to get into hockey, go see a live game because the sport is lightyears better in person. It also helps that the women that are into hockey seem to be of the more attractive variety, so there's that.

Were you at the game too?
