Stanford RB Tyler Gaffney to Forgo Senior Season
Gaffney was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round of June's MLB draft after batting .301 with eight home runs in three seasons for the Cardinal as an outfielder.
"Every athlete dreams of the opportunuties that I have been afforded, first at Stanford, and now with Pittsburgh," Gaffney said in a statement. "Every day of the last three years has prepared me for the chance to compete profesionally, and I cannot thank enough the coaches and professors that have worked with me."
Gaffney ran for 449 yards off 74 carries (6.1 ypc) and seven touchdowns last season as the No. 2 running back behind Stefan Taylor.
Taylor is again the projected starter, while true freshman Barry J. Sanders (son of legend Barry Sanders) is expected to receive plenty of carries.
Gaffney also added that he would return to Stanford to complete his degree in sociology.
