Steelers vs Patriots: NFL Week 14 Picks and Live Thread

Big week for actual playoff positioning and an even bigger week for fantasy football playoffs. Good luck to you in the latter. Then of course, there's that big game in New England. Can the Patriots undefeated season continue?

Here's my week 14 predictions to get us started today. Feel free to share your picks and Q up today's NFL action below.

Patriots 31, Steelers 28
I think this will be a great back and forth game with several lead changes and ties, but ultimately the Pats get it done. If the game was in Pittsburgh, I might be compelled to pick the upset. They're precisely the type of physical, blitzing team best suited to beat New England. I say it comes down to one more Steeler turnover than they can afford and another late Patriots touchdown. Can't wait to watch.

Bills 17, Dolphins 13
Bengals 38, Rams 24
Cowboys 35, Lions 17
Packers 23, Raiders 20
Texans 24, Bucs 17
Jaguars 20, Panthers 10
Eagles 27, Giants 24
Chargers 24, Titans 16
Vikings 24, 49ers 10
Cardinals 24, Seahawks 23
Broncos 21, Chiefs 14
Jets 16, Browns 14

Jaguars flatten Panthers

Giants beat Eagles in a good one

UPSET Steelers over Patriots close

I don't think that the Bills/Dolphins game is going to be the shootout that you predict.

My pick:

Patriots 41, Steelers 17 ... the rest of the games don't matter to me all that much. But if the Pats win and the Ravens handle the Colts, the Patriots clinch the #1 seed.

41-17?  I think that's a bit of a stretch, this game will be A LOT closer than that.  I don't see the Pats winning by more than 9.

Eagles already on the board, McNabb to Westbrook.

Bills already a TD on Miami, let the slaughter begin...

That's fine. A lot of people might agree with you. But a lot of people think very highly of this Steelers team. And I'm still wondering why. Remind me...who have they beaten?

The Packers have realized very early that Oakland can not stop the run at all.

The TD was set up on a muffed punt by Ted Ginn. Way to pick 'em Dolphins.

Honestly, Pittsburgh IMO is the 4th best team in the AFC, but they match up fairly well, and teams don't go unbeaten.  Watching the Patriots this year is like watching someone play Tecmo Super Bowl.  They flatten the first 10 or so opponants, then play a few close and lose one, and then go back to flattening people.  I think the flattening resumes next week.

I just think 41-17 is a pretty big stretch, considering the Pats have almost lost to the Eagles and Ravens.  The Steelers are very similar to the Ravens, except twice as good.

I'm going to go ahead and say that these black Lions jerseys are some of my favorite jerseys in the league. In fact, the Lions have excellent jerseys across the board, and always have.

Pittsburgh might be the 4th best team in the AFC. But the Patriots are THE best team in the NFL. And those close games were the wakeup call that they needed. They won't let the Steelers sneak up on them. They will be ruthless today, and Big Ben will more than likely leave the field in tears.

Indeed the Patriots are the best, but everybody loses one.

We'll see, I think we're going to have a very close and very entertaining game.

TD Houston, Rosenfels to Andre Johnson

I've been saying it since week 3 or 4, the Patriots won't go 16-0.  It won't happen, either they lose this week, or they'll lose when resting some people against the Giants.

Titans stall, FG.  Bengals get a TD, Rudi run.

I've said it since weeek 3 or 4 as well...they WILL go 16-0. So far, your time is running out, and my prediction is only becoming more and more correct every week.

The Packers continue to make things hard for themselves, as Favre is picked off deep in Oakland territory. He doesn't look 100% sharp so far.

Wow, the Lions sure fell apart at the goalline.  Still, with the FG, up 10-0 over Dallas.  Who knew?

Bills another TD, hope you had Robert Royal on your fantasy team.

They wore that on Thanksgving a few years back against the Pats, who wore their old school red jerseys with the Pat Patriot logo...one of the best Uni games in recent history.

Dolphins fumble again, but recover. That's their 6th fumble. 3 have been lost, to go with 2 picks. I thought they would win at least once this year, but now I'm not so sure. Right now they couldn't beat a CFL team.

Rosenfels has actually been alright this year when he's played for Schaub.  McCown was decent last week too.  Both have pretty good teams' around them, and they aren't THAT bad.

Nice return by Chad Jackson...I hope the Steelers enjoy their few minutes in the lead, because it's all downhill for them from here. Patriots WR's dropped some passes in the first series, and that's not going to happen again.

It's still early, and the Steelers have a couple more long drives like their opening one...that Patriots defense will tire out real fast.

Hahaha. I'm glad you're here. This could be pretty fun. A few things you might want to keep in mind thus far:

  • The Patriots offense will AT LEAST match those offensive drives
  • Maroney is looking considerably better than Willie Parker so far

Those two, especially Maroney stepping up, will prove to be huge in this game.

12/9/07

Wow...and Maroney's effectiveness (only on 2 carries) opened it up for a beautiful play action to Randy Moss...ridiculous.

Yikes...  Seriously, Moss is the MVP this year.  I really don't think there's any need for a discussion at this point.  When Moss is limited the Patriots are very beatable, when he is unleashed they are unbeatable.  Its pretty much that simple.

But to try to discredit what they've done, and to try to say I'M the idiot for predicting they win...that's just crossing the line into blatant stupidity, and I just have no respect for that.

I can see that. I mean, I don't like the Boston teams, but I would like to think I'm objective enough to understand how good they are and how well they are run (except the Celtics, since they basically took advantage of McHale's stupidity). I can see why people are picking the Steelers, but to say it's definite is pretty arrogant and short-sighted, on both sides of the equation.

I've always wondered why more teams don't fake the "we're just going to sit on the ball play before half" and play action with a deep ball. Worst case scenario it's an interception 40 yards down field.

When are the Titans going to come to the realization that Vince Young is NOT a good QB in this league? People love to get caught up in their record after he took over last year, but anyone who credits that to Young is insane.

He's now managed to rack up twice as many INT's as TD's. If the Titans are smart, they'll pick up whoever they can get to replace him in this QB-deep draft. Ryan, Woodson, Brohm or even Brennan could do better on this team than Young. VY10 might be better suited as a TE, if he has the hands.

For the person who obviously loves Favre and gave me the P:

I would like to see him go out on a good note..... more than that, I would like to see his understudy, who looks like he has skill, take the reigns of the team and help move GB into the next era!!! I think he is going to be dynamite to watch!

Anywho, the Steelers are right there at the half.  If Pittsburgh can have another opening drive like the first half, this Pats team is gonna start to panic!

You should know by now...this Patriots team doesn't know what panic is. That's the one thing that WON'T happen, no matter what the score is.

Are you kidding me? Like when they ignored the handshake soap opera with Mangini? Or when they ignored the incident last week with Harrison and Billick?

I don't give a damn about "classy". I love how everyone attacks this team every week, and talks all the smack they want about them, and then people expect the Patriots to sit there and take it.

If anyone on the Patriots "guaranteed" a victory, it would be viewed as classless...BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE RIGHT. But when Anthony Smith does it, everyone laughs it off as just some young guy making a rookie mistake.

Try again.

Are you sure it was because they're suck-ups? Or was it because he absolutely torched your sorry excuse for a secondary, including that toolbag who "guaranteed" victory for your terrible little towel boys?

399 passing yards, 4 TD, 0 INT against the "best" defense in the NFL ... maybe Brady's just a damn good quarterback.

It's unfortunate that you can't just realize this Patriots team is FAR superior to your Steelers, and if they played this game 10 times, the Patriots might actually win 11.

Nantz & Simms are indeed suck-ups.  Everytime I watch a Pats game when they're in the booth, they will make it a point to praise Brady as much as possible, even to the point of blaming the receiver when Brady makes a bad throw.

I'm speaking from past experience with those 2.  Also, I saw through the 3rd quarter until the Steelers got a holding penalty deep in their territory that gave the Patriots a 1st-and-goal.  I then had to leave for church, so you can stop running your mouth right there!

I told Pat the reason I missed most of the 2nd half, yet he kept his mouth running...hence why I explained to him my religion comes first, which clearly he knows being a good Christian boy himself.  Where did I ever say the Patriots game was going to be easy?  You twist people's words so bad it's pathetic.  I said that's the reason I thought Pittsburgh was going to win, but I never said the game would be easy.  What I said would be easy is "if they were up late in the game like the Ravens were, they would easily be able to run out the clock, because that's their style of football."  They obviously weren't up late in the game.  I'm not complaining about this game, but I also don't need people like you twisting what I say all the time.  They didn't have that great of a running game either, except for the one rush where Maroney pushed the pile with help, other than that I didn't see much progress on the ground by New England.  So anytime you want to start reading what I write and not try to backfire it on me with words that never came out of my mouth, be my guest.
