Stephen Curry Held To Zero Points Against Loyola
Worst Defensive Strategy Ever
Occasionally you see some strange defenses employed to try and stop certain players, like the old Ted Williams shift that's been used on guys like Bonds and Giambi. Well, last night Loyola (Md.) totally stopped the nation's leading scorer, Stephen Curry, who's averaging 35 points per game. And they did it by double teaming him the whole game. Yes, the whole damn game.

An interesting strategy, and it succeeded masterfully, as Curry was held to zero points. Only problem is that, you know, Loyola basically played 3 on 4 for the game against Davidson because of that.

Naturally, they lost by 30.

So, uh, why in the hell did they do this, exactly?

"We had to play against an NBA player tonight," Loyola coach Jimmy Patsos explained. "Anybody else ever hold him scoreless? I'm a history major. They're going to remember that we held him scoreless or we lost by 30?"

Man, what I'll remember most is that you held Curry scoreless and still sucked so bad that you lost by 30.

By the way, if you're wondering what the fans thought of this travesty (it was played at Davidson), they were none too thrilled. Boos and catcalls rained down on Pastos and Loyola for basically the whole game. In fact, Davidson head coach Bob McKillop was so pissed at Loyola's move that he had Curry stay in the game until the final minute - long after the game had been decided - to just hang out on the side of the court doing nothing as two Loyola players guarded him.

It would seem like Pastos was simply trying to make a name for himself judging by his lame post game comments.

"I know the fans are mad at me, but I had to roll the dice as far as a coach goes. I'm not some rookie coach," said Patsos, a former longtime assistant at Maryland. "I won a national title as a top assistant coach to Gary Williams. For 13 years I spent on Tobacco Road. I coached a couple of No. 1 picks in the draft. And we scored 48 points. That's the problem that Loyola basketball had today."

I'm sure Gary Williams is proud to be associated with this dumbass of a coach. Seriously, what a jackass. Nothing like completely compromising the integrity of the game to make a name for yourself. At least on the plus side, we know this fool Pastos stands no chance of ever becoming a coach at any major school now.

I can live with that.

Curry held scoreless on 3 shots, but Davidson still blows out Loyola. [ESPN]

But he kept Stephen Curry scoreless. I think that's going to help their chances at getting an at-large bid later, when the tournament rolls around. I mean... any team can win 25 games, or win their conference tournament. But who can hold Stephen Curry to zero points, valiantly doing so with complete disregard for the score and no concern for winning or losing? That's elite company right there.

Half time speech must have been a real pick me up huh?  "Keep your heads up guys, I know were down by a C note however, that superstar Curry is 26 below his average and I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance!"

I think you expect too much out of him at the next level.  No, he's not going to average 35 ppg in the NBA like he does at Davidson so in that respect he'll blow.  But he'll still be able to come off of  screens and make open shots.  I think that he can be a pretty good 2nd or 3rd option for almost any NBA team.  A solid career as a player like Rip Hamilton is not out of the question for him.

I'm sure he could have fought through the occasional double team... but why? When the rest of his team is playing 4 on 3, why bother? It's in the best interest of the team to just let someone else have the ball, especially considering they were winning big anyway.

Still the best player in the Curry house.

Not being able to fight through a Loyola double team goes a long way towards warning teams about that fact.

Yes, because so many NBA players are double-teamed for an entire game up and down the court, to the point where the game essentially becomes 4 on 3. I remember back when Michael Jordan used to play full games quadruple-teamed. Totally something every NBA player must be prepared for.

It seems like 90% of all players drafted every year are busts and are out of the league within 5 years, so if you get even a situational shooter (which I think that Curry will be much more than that because he can shoot lights-out from anywhere on the court) it's really worth a lottery pick.  It's especially worth it when you consider you could just as easily get a player like Zach Randolph or Darius Miles that have all the size and talent in the world but get butt-hurt because they aren't included as one of the teams bobbleheads and take themselves out of games so they can go pout in the locker room.  And as you've argued in the past defense is a relative term in basketball and somewhat over-rated.

Loyola's coach just straight puzzled me.  I understand what and why he did what he did; HOWEVER, after you see it just isn't working....you need to switch it up.  I think the coach was looking for his own gratification (whatever that was), but what does this say about how he handles his team?  What do his players think? I think it was all about the coach and he didn't let HIS players even attempt to guard him.....I mean they could have tried a box and 1...not saying it would have worked but then whatever area Curry's in; there would have been a double team...with out playing 3 on 4.

All I'm saying is that there are other options......I just don't think the coach gave his team a chance to be competetive in this game.
