Stevan Jovetic reveals he declined Real Madrid offer to play for Man City
Stevan Jovetic has revealed that he snubbed the opportunity to join Real Madrid since he preferred to play for Manchester City. The Montenegro international claims he could have moved to Real Madrid last summer, but the chance to play for Manchester City took him into the Premier League.
The 24-year-old forward was bought by Manchester City after paying Fiorentina 24 million pounds last July. At the time Juventus and Arsenal were circling above Jovetic, hoping to steal the deal from Manchester City.
Jovetic revealed that his former Fiorentina teammate persuaded him to join the Eastlands, although Real Madrid had shown interest in acquiring his services. Jovetic, who recently scored his first Premier League goal against Tottenham Hotspur, is delighted to be at Manchester City.
The Montenegro international claims to have joined Manchester City because the club was running a “major project” to create a squad that would dominate the Europe.
“There was also Real Madrid, but I chose City,” Jovetic told BeIn Sport. “Nastasic and I talked a lot, he convinced me. I decided to come here because there is a major project with many players.”’
Jovetic further revealed that he could have joined Manchester City in 2012, but instead he was enjoying his stay in Fiorentina and wanted to develop more as a player before making a move.
“I should have come the year before, but I was happy and I had a nice season with [manager Vincenzo] Montella and Fiorentina,” Jovetic added.
Jovetic has only scored three goals since moving to Manchester City this summer. The reason behind the lack of goals is Jovetic’s injury-hit season at Manchester City. The Partizan bred player claims to be happy with his stay at Manchester City despite lack of action.
“I never regretted the choice,” Jovetic said. “Sure these four or five months have been difficult at the beginning because I was not playing, I got injured often, but now it is all behind me. I never doubted myself even in the most difficult moments. I knew that I could play in this team and now I have to prove that.”
Jovetic has played in the last four games for Manchester City, although he has yet to make a strong start for the club. Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko remain manager Manuel Pellegrini’s first-choice options in the attack.
