Today's opening stage of the Tour de France was supposed to be a normal flat stage. A group of riders would break away, get caught, and then the sprinters would take over in a mass finish. All was going to plan until the final 10 kilometers, when the team bus for the Oreca-GreenEDGE team crashed into the finish line banner. For a few minutes, this was the scene at the finish line.

Here's a video of the crash.

Race organizers desperately tried to restore order, which only made it worse. First they said the stage would end at the 3 kilometers to go mark. Then they got the bus out of the way, so they changed their minds and said the stage would end at the original finish line. In all this chaos, there was a crash that took out many of the top sprinters, including Mark Cavendish. In the confusion, the organizations did do the right thing and gave everyone the same time for the day, so no one will lose time in the race.

Someone named Marcel Kittel won the stage, such as it was.
