You could call this the 'Teams Formerly Known as No. 2' Bowl. At a few stages of this truly bizarre college football season, Oregon and South Florida were both ranked 2nd and had visions of a shocking national title run. The Bulls came back down to Earth and the Ducks lost Dennis Dixon and have struggled with the forward pass ever since.
There's still a lot to play for, ending the season with a bright finish in the Sun Bowl tops the list.
Why I'm picking South Florida: Despite the early success and late struggles, the Bulls are thrilled to be in El Paso playing on New Year's Eve. Oregon is not. The Ducks QB situation is shaky which should play right into the hands of a solid USF D.
Why I could be wrong: Ducks' redshirt freshman QB Justin Roper is very talented and after getting a few weeks of consistent practice reps could elevate the offense back to at least a shadow of what it was under Dixon.
