Super Bowl 42 Is Set: New York Giants vs New England Patriots

Boston vs New York, again. Super.

If you're sole rooting interest this postseason has been to see the New England Patriots finally lose, then I think you have the best possible Super Bowl matchup. The Giants can win, they proved as much in Week 17 while very few people thought a rematch was remotely possible.

Patriots 21, Chargers 12
This is what's frightening about the Pats. Tom Brady was intercepted 3 times, Randy Moss had one reception and at no point was I convinced they'd lose. Of course it helped the Chargers were playing with half a quarterback, and the leagues best running back was on the bench. You have to pitch a perfect game to beat New England and San Diego was far from that. It's only fair we get to see the Pats in Super Bowl XLII.

Giants 23, Packers 20
As bummed as  I am for Brett Favre, I'm equally happy for Eli Manning (and Lawrence Tynes). I don't know if you can break the game down this simply, but Plaxico Burress could not be covered by Al Harris and Green Bay decided not to adjust. Frankly, New York didn't go to to Plax enough. I realize they're the 5th seed in the weaker NFC, but I feel there's no question which team has the best chance at picking off the Patriots. With their defensive line and mismatch at wide receiver of their own, I believe we're going to have a game.

More on this, of course, over the next two weeks. We plan to pace ourselves.

Should be a great matchup... not sure who has more of an advantage due to that week 17 meeting:

The Giants because they have played the Patriots already once, so the intimidation of facing the Pats for the first time is gone.

Or, the Patriots because Belichick has seen the Giants first hand already and, probably biasly, I don't think anyone in the league makes adjustments better.

Like you said, CF... plenty of time to talk about this.

I am excited about the game being in Arizona, though.  It has been too long since Brady and that offense has played in a warm, windless environment.  I am expecting BIG things!

I doubt I'll pick the Giants, but I think having played New England recently and playing very well against them turned them into the most likely NFC team to beat the Patriots.

Just hope its a good game. Green Bay had Favre, but a whole bunch of inexperienced player. The Giants maturity and Tom Coughlin should allow for a competitive game.

But like you said, the neutral weather conditions could open up the Patriots passing attack again.

Unless its absolutely pouring, by some miracle, in the desert, I give the Giants no chance.  The reason why the Patriots last two games have been close is bad weather.  The great irony of this season was that the best teams in both conferences were cold weather teams who didn't play cold weather football.  New England was good enough to overcome that and the Packers weren't.  That said, go Giants.

I think they have a retractable roof in Arizona.  So the weather can be controlled if it is bad.

Good call.  Retractable roofs should only be used in baseball though, however, thats a completely different discussion.

The Patriots are 13 point favorites... just the thing the Giants need to get fired up. It'll be interesting to see how both coaching staffs prepare their teams and make adjustments from the week 17 showdown.

Aren't the the "most likely NFC team to beat the Patriots" by default now, since they're the only one who even has a chance to play them at all?

I think the NFL should give the NFC Pro Bowlers a shot. It could be an interesting game if they put the talent-laden but chemistry-lacking Pro Bowl squad up against the Pats at their best.

you know what I meant ... of the six teams in the NFC playoffs, I think (thought) Giants with their newfound confidence are (were) well suited.

I would have been more nervous about the Cowboys, to be honest. I think this game will be an embarrassment.

So you think the Patriots are going to beat the spread?

Easily. They might beat the spread BY the spread.

Harsh. I hope you end up eating those words :P

I think there is a chance the Giants can win (yes, I am drinking the blue kool aid), but I am expecting this to be a competitive game regardless.

I hope I eat those words as well. I also would love to see a competitive game. But I'm realistic. And the Giants had everything going for them in week 17, and still couldn't win. In this one, many factors swing in the Patriots' favor. The weather alone will account for at least a TD swing in favor of the Pats.

It is worth noting that Brady does have a high ankle sprain.  Those are the ones that don't go away very easily.  I doubt it matters, but its about the only thing that makes me think the Giants could win this game.
