TBS Postseason Billboard Promotes Team That is Unlikely to Make Postseason
READ MORE:

What's wrong with this picture of TBS's Midtown Manhattan billboard promoting the postseason?

We have David Ortiz, of the division leading Red Sox. We've got Derek Jeter, of the wild card leading Yankees. There's also David Wright, of the first place Mets.

The other guy? Yeah, that's John Smoltz of the 3rd place Braves, who are 4.5 games out of the division lead and 5 games out of the wild card spot.

We all know that TBS is the Braves station (or at least it is for a few more weeks until they start showing national games and cease their Braves coverage), but if they are going to put John Smoltz on a giant billboard for the postseason, maybe they should show him carrying golf clubs instead.

For those who are wondering, the Braves currently have a 17.1471% chance of making the playoffs. They are by no means eliminated, but TBS could have picked from 11 other teams that are more likely to make the playoffs and are not featured on the billboard. If you figure they wanted 2 AL & 2 NL teams, that still leaves 7 better choices.

With ESPN covering the Red Sox/Yankees bias, TBS probably just wanted to make sure another team got some biased love as well. Despite this, it's still a better promotion than anything involving Dane Cook.

Little Presumptuous On That Billboard, TBS? (Best Week Ever)

Whats even worse is the commercials show the Brewers and Cardinals!!!!! Neither one will make it as a wild card and last time I saw my Cubbies were first place and just got done taking 2/3 from the Brew Crew!

Yankees might not make it either... watch for Seattle to make a push, and also the Sox-Yanks series in Boston could finally determine their fate. A Red Sox series win could knock NYY out of the postseason picture. Other than that, i love the Red Sox's odds! 99.7% chance. Nice! Elimination # is 18. Yankees are running out of time! A few more Red Sox wins, and a couple of Yankee losses, and the division is Boston's!

You know it takes time to do a mock-up for signs like that.  The layout was probably made at least a month or two before the sign was put up.  Many people thought the Braves chances were better during that time period, and predicting the future is hard to do.  Furthermore the season is not over yet.

It does take time, but there were always several other teams more deserving of having a player on the billboard, no matter when the billboard was designed.

By the way, since this was posted 6 days ago, the Braves' playoff chances have gone down to 4.6%.

i think Vlad Guerrero would be a good fit. The Red Sox and Angels by far have the best teams in the MLB.

He probably would have been my pick too, even though it would have meant 3 AL teams and only 1 NL team. The Angels have been solid pretty much all year long.

yeah. Not many other NLs i'd like to put on there... if the Phils get closer, Ryan Howard would be a player i'd like to see on there.

It seems to me that the billboard features both New York teams and their rivals.  I would think that at the time when they were most likely made that the Braves were in second place to the Mets first.  Having, probably, just signed Texiera, the Braves were picked by many to make a real run at the Mets.  The signs are posted in New York city, and thus seem to cater to the New York teams and their fans to promote interest in the post season.   Also,  there might have been an issue with obtaining shots or  paying a fee to feature players from other teams.  The production costs might have been reduced by using a photo that they already had and cropped.

That's a pretty good point.  I never thought of that.

And I'm not just saying that, Jon!
