The "Big One" and Talladega - A match no one wants

5/5/13 in NASCAR   |   Debi_L   |   11301 respect

Blog Photo - Talladega Aaron's 499 [Live Race Thread]No one knows when it will come, but chances that it will are about 99%.  No one knows who will be involved in it, but chances are a lot of really good cars will be turned into junk piles.  No one knows who will cause it, or whether it will be intentional or an "accident".  What is it

Well, it is the "Big One" of course.  On our super-speedways pack racing is the norm.  Hell, it's a necessity if you want to be anywhere near the front.  When these packs of cars get together, sometimes there are only fractions of inches between them, to the front, to the back and to the side, or sides.  One tiny move of the steering wheel can send the car careening out of control, almost always taking at least ten cars along for the ride.  Sometimes that single car will come out of it at the other end, with minor damage, leaving a wreck of metal as the aftermath.  Sometimes there are injuries.  Just ask Dale Jr.

While we don't like those wrecks where anyone is hurt, I have to be honest here.  The Big One will get your heart pounding, the blood racing through your veins.  It can take your breath away.  Even twitter will go quiet for a moment or two, save for those reporters who are paid to post every update.

We've seen some incredible wrecks over the years, most of the horrific ones coming while teams were using the COT. Now that we have the Gen6 car in use, will we see similar wrecks?  Let's hope not.

Qualifying was rained out yesterday, so teams will line up based on their practice speeds.  This realitively new rule is infinitely better than the old procedure of lining up by points.  While practice speeds may not be the most accurate telling of a car and driver's ability, it will group cars together that are driving similar speeds.

Word has just come down that there is still a chance of rain today, so the start of the race has been moved up twelve minutes.  Although twelve minutes may not make any difference, it could.  We are about to go racing, so don't forget the Sports Bars, bet some Q-Bucks and maybe you'll win!

There are a ton of favorites for today's race, and with Michael Waltrip in the field, he could definitely be a spoiler!  Of course, I'm picking Dale Jr.  Who is your pick?

They can build safer race cars, they can build safer walls, but they can't get their heads out of their asses far enough to keep them on the race track, and that's pretty disappointing," Newman said. "I wanted to make sure I get that point across, and y'all can figure out who 'they' is." (Spoiler: "They" is NASCAR.)

I found racing in that much darkness to be ridiculous, and my feelings about "The Big One" and the attitudes about it (especially from the FOX booth) aren't a secret. That said, congrats to Ragan.

Brad Keselowski ‏should go get some tissues.

mad as hell about that finish. We were suppose to line up 10th when the 34 switched lanes entering 3 before green. That lane won.

This coming from an idiot who I don't how many times in the past year has tried to cheat on restarts.

5/5/13   |   JenX63   |   31601 respect

What a clusterf*** and side show that all was. Is it any wonder Nascar is losing fans by the hundreds.....

5/5/13   |   kramer   |   11003 respect

Thanks to that hefty rain delay I was able to come home from work and watch the last 60 laps.  Congrats to Ragan, what a wild finish!  Stenhouse stuck his nose where there wasn't room.  I'll take a no-name team in victory lane any day, that was awesome.

5/5/13   |   Debi_L   |   11301 respect

That was one helluva finish to come home for!!!! WOW WOW!!! WTG David Ragan!!!

To quote the boys in the booth:  "Have you ever??? No, I have NEVER!!!"

1 chance at a green white checkered....

5/5/13   |   texas_tornado4261   |   71782 respect

Wow....what a wreck

5/5/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

That was predictable. Kurt Busch flips and lands on Newman, among other chaos. This is so stupid.

5/5/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

And the field is bunched up again. This will not end well.

Also, FOX booth, I'm pretty sure that if you're predicting a wreck, you shouldn't then laugh about it.

Shows what I know. Drivers to their cars. They are hoping to restart at 6 local time, 7 eastern.

5/5/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

Reports of hail and lightning coming into the area. Those at the track have been told to take cover. Hope they stay safe, but it looks like this one is going to get called.

He lost Jimmie when JJ jumped out in front of Matt.  No teammates now.  Jr is at the back of the lead pack.

Did they just show 3 laps between commercials with the rain reportedly about to arrive? *facepalm*

5/5/13   |   Debi_L   |   11301 respect

FOX is in the midst of 4,000 commercials, as twitter is alive with reports that the rain is imminent.  The front pack is mostly staying in line, waiting until it is practically on top of them.

Back to Green!! Dale Jr got the free pass.  Fourteen cars involved is what I am hearing.  Some are repaired and out on the track again, while some are in the garage for repairs.  Burton and Stewart are back on track, along with Gordon, while Harvick, Busch, Vickers, Kahne, Biffle and Reutimann are in the garage.

Kenseth was leading until Ryan Newman took the lead.

DAMN those cars are buffeting around a ton!

Hinchcliffe wins the IndyCar race with a pass on the last turn of the last lap. They were racing on a street course. Just incredible racing down the stretch.

Time for this race once I catch my breath.

5 laps left in Brazil. Sato, Newgarden, and Hinch battling for the win. Tense stuff.

5/5/13   |   Debi_L   |   11301 respect

Hamlin vacates the car thru the roof hatch, just as they practiced.  Vickers is in.

5/5/13   |   Debi_L   |   11301 respect

Dammit.  Contact with the 83 puts Dale Jr in the pits to repair left rear damage.  He gets a break though, when the 21 of Trevor Bayne has a huge issue - he says transmission.  Fluid all over the track.  One of the rainshowers skirted the track, and racing will continue after the clean up.

5/5/13   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

Flipped quick to this race, and the skies look pretty dark in spots. I'll be back once the IndyCar race ends. Only 17 laps to go.
