Carmelo Anthony had a dominate 23 first half points and help lead team usa to a victory.
The situation looked bleak. The team’s starting Center and main big man, besides NBA rookie Anthony Davis, had to sit on the bench for most of the first half.
The sky was ready to fall. There are no exhibition games for Team U.S.A. Every game is a must win, even if the Olympics have not started yet. If the team were to lose before they stepped foot in London there would have been a media fires storm.
The consensus from media analyst has been that the best way to beat this team would be by getting Chandler into foul trouble and taking advance of the team’s lack of size. The script played perfectly to that scenario as Spain looked ready to pull off an upset in front of a loud and enthusiastic home crowd.
But unfortunately for them, Carmelo Anthony had another idea.
Anthony single handedly kept team U.S.A in the game by scoring 23 first half points and carried the team during the early stretches of the game when no other player could muster up any type of offense. Team U.S.A went into half time with a 48-40 lead and never looked backed.
The team went on to a relatively easy 100-78 victory over Spain.
“We knew that this was a big game when Coach K talked to us” said Chris Paul “So we approached it like that and it was a good win for us.”
Note: Mark Gasol did not play in the game.
