Argentina knew they had a slim chance heading into the semi-finals against the US. Before the game even started, Manu Ginobili said, “The odds are against us. We have a 10 percent or even a five percent chance of winning, but we are going to fight for this."
The odds, however, proved against them. Argentina kept the game close in the 1st half, but the US went on to score 16 points in less than 3 minutes in the 3rd quarter. Kevin Durant scored four 3-pointers in the 3rd quarter alone and finished the game with a team high of 19 points.
The only loss for the US was when Russell Westbrook came down awkwardly on his ankle and went to the locker room. Coach K, however, said that it was nothing more than a mild-ankle sprain. Whether he plays in the gold medal round remains to be seen however.
The US will now play Spain for the gold medal. Carmelo Anthony said, "Anything less than this would have been unsatisfying for us. We believe that we could get here, and we're here now. We got one game left." And with the way the US has been shooting the 3-point ball, it’s highly unlikely that Spain can keep the game as close as they once did in Beijing.
The US will play Spain this coming Sunday.
