It's the biggest and most exciting upset victory in the history of the sport, if you consider "yacht racing" a sport. After being all but eliminated with an 8-1 deficit, Team USA won eight consecutive lose-or-go-home races and capped off the comeback with today's decisive win. Starting behind, Oracle Team USA took the lead and won the race by 44 seconds.
As you can see to the left, the victory celebration involved dozens of other smaller boats yacht-rushing the winning catamaran and doing circles around it. Not pictured are about 15 cases of Dom Perignon that will be charged to the Oracle credit card and mostly just sprayed on people's heads.
Exttending the contest to 19 races in a best-of-17 tournament, Oracle Team USA won the America's Cup over their finalist opponent Emirates Team New Zealand. If you're down, there are sweet video highlights of the America's Cup win at New Zealand's 3News.
You can see an animated GIF of Oracle Team USA's boat victoriously crossing the finish line at left. The big American flag was not actually present on the water, NBC put it there as a video overlay.
The win will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in sports, unless there more cheating allegations. Team USA has spent the last week on the brink of losing, twice trailing by seven wins. But they won 8 consecutive races, and 10 of the last 12 to retain the prestigious and very, very old Auld Mug trophy.
For team owner Larry Ellison and the San Francisco area, this means the race will probably return for 2016. For San Francisco residents, this means more traffic, tourists and congestion in 2016.
