I have always wondered how accurate referees are in certain instances. Picture it, fourth and one at the goal line. The running ball gets the carry and there is a pileup at the goal line. Did he get in? The refs make the call but did they get it right? We may never know, or can we. In European soccer matches they have been considering putting a chip in the ball to figure out if questionable plays were goals or not. I think the same technology could be used for American football. Through GPS or an on/infield tracking system and a chip or beacon in the ball, they could get it exactly right every time. Wouldn't it be nice to know that the call is accurate, instead of arguing about spot. Forward progress could be spotted, maybe even plays like fumbles could be accurately tracked. Technology has invaded almost every aspect of modern life, why not sports. I don't think, in todays world, that it would take very long to get an extremely accurate workable system. It might take some time to get the wrinkles out of such a system, but I feel it would not take away anything from the game we love, and offer a more reliable system of the most difficult part of modern day officiating (in my opinion), spotting the ball. With all the possible applications of such a system, I think it should be seriously looked in to. But that's just me, what do you think.
