Throughout most of this whole Brett Favre mess, most of the attention has been put on Favre and his actions. While this is justified, one man has somehow gone blameless while continuing to hurt his team. That man is Ted Thompson, GM of the Green Bay Packers.
Thompson's one job as GM of the Packers is to build the best team possible. While one can debate whether or not we'll be better off without Favre (probably not), his decision to go with Rodgers can't be faulted. Rodgers is his guy, and Favre did at least at one point commit to moving away from the game. However, Thompson has still miserably managed this situation.
Thompson has been trying to fight and win a PR campaign against Favre, and in doing so, forgot he runs a team. Its been known for close to a month now, that Favre was coming back and held all the power. Now, if we know this, certainly an NFL GM does. However, instead of doing his job and finding the best possible situation for Brett and the team, Thompson let the situation continue to grow into the fiasco we have today, which will only get worse tomorrow when Favre shows up to camp. Considering the league has teams with Alex Smith, Rex Grossman, John Beck, Troy Smith, and other unimpressive QBs starting, it shouldn't have been to hard to find a team willing to bring in a guy coming off of a MVP-like season.
Thompson has won the PR battle. Across the nation most fans are sick of this story and here in Wisconsin we just want it settled no matter how it ends. However, Thompson has created a circus around his team and has put their success at risk. Quite frankly, he just hasn't done his job.
