Dooley was hired from Louisiana Tech in 2010 and replaced Lane Kiffin, who fled Rocky Top for USC.
The Volunteers finished 6-7 in his first season, which was acceptable at the time with a mediocre bowl appearance under unusual circumstances. But instead of improving, they've backtracked — Tennessee went 5-7 in 2011 and is 4-6 so far this year.
Under Dooley's three-year reign, the Vols have a 4-18 record in the SEC and have yet to beat a ranked opponent.
Tennessee is aching to become the relevant football program it was back in the late '90s, where it was a consistent SEC and national title contender.
Dooley has proved that he does not fit that bill and could be given a one-way ticket out of Knoxville very shortly.
