New Tennessee football coach Butch Jones has got off to a quick start with his first full recruiting season for the class of 2014, as five-star running back Jalen Hurd announced his commitment Thursday morning.Blog Photo - Tennessee Football: Volunteers land No. 2 overall RB for 2014

Hurd, a student athlete at Beech High School (TN), is the No. 2 prospect at his position and the No. 10 overall player for his class, according to 247Sports.

“I really wanted to go to UT,” Hurd told The Tennessean. “Last year, they weren’t in such a good position for me to go there, but with Coach (Butch) Jones and the new staff, I think it’s the best place for me to go.”

For a program that hasn’t had a lot to be excited for over the last several years, Hurd’s commitment could prove to be monumental.

Tennessee has struggled to put forth a strong rushing game, having averaged less than 140 yards on the ground per game dating back to the 2007 season.

With many questions in the backfield – heading into this year’s spring session, at least – Hurd could make an immediate impact when he reaches campus in 2014.

Hurd, who missed nearly three full games as a junior in 2012, broke the TSSAA state single-season record for rushing yards with 3,357, all while compiling an impressive 43 touchdowns.

Either Ohio State or Florida was expected to land Hurd, who seemed to have been leaning toward giving his verbal to Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes. He becomes the fifth member of Jones’ class for ’14, which currently ranks No. 6 overall.
