2008 was a tough, tough year for the Dallas Cowboys. They were expected to win the Super Bowl, but instead didn't even make the playoffs. Yesterday, because two nightclub-related shootings is one too many, the Cowboys decided to let Pacman Jones go, but it appears that cleaning house could go even further. The Dallas Morning News is reporting today that the 'Boys have some serious questions to answer for next season, "Like whether to release Terrell Owens because there's not a player or coach on this team with a strong enough personality to bring out the best in him, while limiting his charismatic influence in the locker room."
Just so you know, ESPN's Ed Werder, or as I like to call him, "Mr. Cowboys Man", has also said that T.O. is in jeopardy of being cut.
There are of course good reasons for this. Owens reportedly accused Romo and Jason Witten of schemeing to keep him out of plays, he also got into a fight with Jason Witten, and last but not least, T.O. got Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton to complain with him about the offense to Jason Garrett.
One could certainly make the argument that T.O. needs to be gotten rid of before he poisons this team any further. However, one of the real questions is who they'd turn to at reciever? Roy Williams was completely MIA while in Dallas, and while I realize he didn't get that much time to play with Romo this season, his dreadful performance is still a concern. Patrick Crayton isn't a No. 1 receiver either.
I know that T.O. isn't the best No. 1 in the league by any means, and he may not even be a true No. 1 anymore, since many teams have discovered that he now struggles when jammed at the line. But he is by far the best receiver the 'Boys have, and if they don't replace with someone of equal or better value, Jason Witten might have to catch every pass next season.
It may ultimately come down to money anyway, with Owens set to make a reported $3.1 million next season. That may not seem like a ton of cash, but it may be too much for a 35-year-old receiver who has a history of destroying teams.
