Terry Francona is the new manager of the Cleveland Indians
Francona's career record as a manager is 1029-915, and he went 744-552 in 8 seasons in Boston. Before that, he managed the Phillies for 4 years, ending up with a 285-363 record.
So which Francona will we see in Cleveland? Will it be the successful, championship-winning manager we saw in Boston? Or will he struggle, like he did in Philly?
Most likely, based on the talent that the Indians have, we'll probably see the less successful version.
Francona is excellent at managing personalities and keeping players happy, almost to a fault, as we saw in September of 2011, when the Red Sox walked all over him and he lost control of the clubhouse.
He's not, however, a great strategic manager. Unless the Indians' front office opens up the checkbook and gets him some talent to work with, I don't see Francona working miracles in Cleveland by any stretch.
I could be wrong, but the next few years will probably be forgettable for Francona.
